The list is basically all of the returning state finalist and a few others that placed high last year.  I don't think much thought went into creating the list.

I agree.  Very indicative of the shabby (if any) coverage of Wrestling by many newspapers ... but especially the Journal sentinel.

A new high school wrestling season is underway in Wisconsin.

Here are the top 47 boys wrestlers to watch this season, in alphabetical order.
Ethan Aird, sr., Darlington/Black Hawk

Aird ended his junior season by taking second at 113 pounds at the WIAA state individual Division 2 tournament. Darlington/Black Hawk coach Jim Wolf expects Aird to end up on the top of the podium as a senior.
Brock Arndt, sr., Appleton North

Appleton North coach Scott Clough expects Arndt to continue to improve over the course of the season after taking second at 220 in D1 as a junior.
Mycah Beckett, jr., De Pere

Beckett finished second at 106 in D1 as a sophomore.
Kaukauna's Lucas Peters is one of the 47 boys wrestlers to watch in Wisconsin this season.
Co`Ji Campbell, jr., Kenosha St. Joseph

Campbell is the reigning state champ at 120 in D3.
Roen Carey, jr., Mineral Point

Carey was the state runner-up at 120 in D3 as a sophomore.
Mason Carpenter, sr., Oshkosh Lourdes/Valley Christian

Carpenter placed second at 126 in D3 last season. "My expectations are the same for him as they are every year for him to go out and compete for a state title," Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian coach Stephan Heinzl said. "He's got some tough competition like always but he has the ability to do it."
Brayten Casey, sr., Menomonie

Casey finished in second place at 113 in D1 as a junior.
Ian Crapp, sr., Fennimore

Crapp was state runner-up at 132 in D3 a season ago.
Plymouth's Silas Dailey won the Division 2 state title at 170 pounds last season.
Silas Dailey, sr., Plymouth

Dailey, who recently committed to Minnesota, won the D2 title at 170 to become the first Panthers wrestler in almost 20 years to win a state championship.

Caleb Dennee, jr., Marshfield

Marshfield coach Cody See says Dennee has his sights set on a state title after taking second at 152 in D1 last season.
Drew Dolphin, sr., Kenosha Christian Life

Dolphin is the reigning state champ at 106 in D3.
Wyatt Duchateau, sr., Hartland Arrowhead

A two-time D1 state champion, Duchateau won the crown at 145 as a junior and at 132 as a sophomore. He's committed to compete for Minnesota next season at the collegiate level.
Evan Gratz, sr., Fennimore

Gratz earned the gold medal at 285 in D3 as a junior.
Aidan Gruenenfelder, jr., Pecatonica/Argyle

Gruenenfelder placed second at 106 in D3 last season but Pecatonica/Argyle coach Grant Sutter says the loss has fueled him. "I know for a fact that that moment and heartbreak have weighed heavy on Aidan's mind through this offseason, and will likely persist regardless of any future goals achieved," Sutter said. "There's a lot of good to come from bad things like that. Many would think that silver at the state tournament is a great accomplishment, and it is, however I know Aidan's not satisfied and won't be until he secures his gold medal."
Brody Hart, sr., Winneconne

Hart, a three-time place winner, finished second at 138 in D2 and also won state at 120 as a freshman. "Brody strives to be a state champion again this year for Winneconne," Wolves coach Tyler Lee said.

Danny Heiser, jr., Evansville

Heiser has won a state title each of his first two seasons, earning the D2 crown at 132 as a sophomore and the 120 title as a freshman.
Jacob Herm, jr., Neenah

Herm, a two-time state finalist, placed second at 126 in D1 but Neenah coach Kyle Kleuskens says he'll be moving up to 144 this season. "He has really stepped up for our team as a leader and his growth in that department has helped his wrestling skyrocket to another level," Kleuskens said.

Koy Hopke, sr., Amery

Hopke is the three-time reigning D2 state champ at 220. He'll look to win a fourth state title this season.
Colton Hush, sr., Baldwin-Woodville

Hush finished as state runner-up at 120 in D2 as a junior.
Wyatt Ingham, sr., Amery

Ingham is the reigning state champ at 182 in D2.
Dawson Johnson, sr., Cumberland

Johnson is looking to become the first wrestler in Cumberland history to win four state titles. He was the state champ at 126 in D3 as a junior in addition to earning the crown at 120 as a sophomore and 106 as a freshman.
Brady Lehnherr, sr., La Crosse Aquinas

Lehnherr took second at 220 in D3 last season.
David Malin, sr., La Crosse Aquinas

Malin earned the state crown at 170 in D3 as a junior.
Tyson Martin, so., La Crosse Aquinas

Martin was state runner-up at 195 in D3 during his first high school season.
Chase Matthias, sr., Two Rivers

Matthias dropped a narrow 3-2 decision in the D2 championship at 195 to finish in second place. "With the work (Chase) put in during the offseason and coming so close last year losing in the state finals, they have a determination to reach the top step on the podium," Two Rivers coach Scott Peltier said.
Charlie Meudt, sr., Dodgeville

Meudt is a two-time D2 state champion, having won the title at 113 as a junior and 106 as a sophomore.
Charlie Millard, sr., Homestead

Millard, the reigning state champ at 160 in D1, is a three-time place winner and is committed to wrestle at Minnesota. He'll be wrestling at 157 this season, according to Homestead coach Ernie Millard.
Cole Mirasola, sr., West Bend West

Cole Mirasola will look to win a third state title, claiming the crown at 285 in D1 last season as junior and 195 as a sophomore.
Connor Mirasola, sr., West Bend West

Connor Mirasola is seeking to win a fourth D1 state championship having won 170 as a freshman, 182 as a sophomore and 195 as a junior last season.
Logan Mueller, jr., Brillion

Mueller placed second at 106 in D2 as a sophomore.
Brillion's Logan Mueller placed second at 106 pounds in Division 2 last season.
TJ Mueller, sr., Crivitz

Mueller was the state runner-up at 182 in D3 last season.
Liam Neitzel, jr., Hudson

Neitzel is the reigning state champ at 106 in D1.
Lucas Peters, sr., Kaukauna

Peters earned the state crown at 126 in D1 a season ago.
Haakon Peterson, so., Dodgeville

Peterson took home the state championship at 106 in D2 during his first high school season.
Max Ronsman, sr., Luxemburg-Casco

Ronsman finished second at 145 in D2 last season and won the 138-pound championship as a sophomore.
Trace Schoenebeck, sr., Luxemburg-Casco

Schoenebeck was the state runner-up at 182 in D2 as a junior.
Jackson Shramek, sr., Blair-Taylor

Shramek won the state title at 182 in D3 last season. Blair-Taylor coach Greg Batina says Shramek will be moving up a weight class this season but has his sights set on becoming the school's first multi-time champion.
Aeoden Sinclair, sr., Milton

Sinclair is a two-time state champ in D1, having won the crown at 220 as a junior and the 170 title as a sophomore.
Ian Smith, sr., Northwestern

Smith is the reigning state champ at 195 in D2 and a two-time silver medalist at 182.
Reid Spurley, sr., Dodgeville

Spurley is a two-time D2 state champ, winning the crown at 120 as a junior and the 113 title as a sophomore.
Tristan Steldt, jr., Fennimore

Steldt won the state title at 160 in D3 last season.
Jake Stoffel, sr., Appleton North

Stoffel is the reigning state champ at 152 in D1 and Clough expects Stoffel to continue to improve as the season progresses.

Connor Thomas, sr., Peshtigo

Thomas finished in second place last season at 220 in D2 but Peshtigo coach Kory Weed thinks he'll win gold this time around. "We are looking for him to climb one rung higher at the end of the season so he can walk away as a state champion," Weed said.
Wyatt Unser, jr., Glenwood City

Unser took second at 113 in D3 last season and Glenwood City coach Shane Strong says the junior is determined to finish with a gold medal. "His goal is to win a state championship this season," Strong said. "He has worked all offseason in the weight room and at Victory School of Wrestling in River Falls under Jens Lantz."
Owen Wasley, sr., St. Croix Central

Wasley finished as state runner-up at 160 in D2 as a junior.
