Eli Stickley he was just banged up from Midlands. He is a solid wrestler. Stickley and Martin won't get majored.

Medberry won't get a pin or even a tech, maybe a major (IMO).  If Stickley wrestles and he looks like he did at midlands he will be a tough out for anyone.  Same with Ricky, BF obviously is very good, but not great and Ricky is looking strong.

Yes anything is possible with Medberry, he is wrestling outstanding.  Brett Pfarr is looking better than ever, I just think Ricky looked tough at midlands and will hold his own.  Of course I shouldn't be so positive because then they'll go look terrible!

Brett Farr is the 2nd best guy in the nation and he was in the match when he faced Jayden Cox at the Southern Scuffle.  He will most likely major, tech, or pin RR.
And Mason Reinhardt teched Brad Johnson at Midlands Johnson just lost to Cox 3-2. Pfarr will get a major at best.

This is a tough road trip. The transit to both places will be brutal. Nebraska has been wrestling real well lately. Minnesota as well outside of a couple guys. Super tough weekend for the first 3 weights.

125,,,,,depends on which JJ shows up. The one last week, as long as he doesnt take down I say JJ by a dec
133,,,,,if Stckley wrestles I say toss up if Cullen, then major. close one MN dec 3 to 3
141,,,,,thorn by dec MN 6-3
149,,,,,I take AC by dec 6-6
157,,,,,Short in a close one 9-6
165,,,,,Jordan by dec 9-9
174,,,,,good match but I will give RC in a close one 9-12
184,,,,,if Ritter is out, I say major for MN, if not a dec for MN 13-12 MN
197,,,,,major for MN 17-12 MN
HWT,,,,dec for W or maybe more 17-16 MN

I have it 17-16 for MN. Which could go the other way also but should be a good one and I have some tickets to this one and I am stokked!

I am a huge JJ fan. Lizak is a tough matchup. Ridiculous on top. He (Jiminez) would rocket up the rankings if he beats Lizak and Lambert.

Lizak is ranked #4 by Flo and Lambert is #7.

I could see that.  We'll see if JJ and Ruschell were a snapshot of things to come or if their wins against OSU were isolated/timely victories.  Having Lizak win by MD is more of a reflection on how well Lizak is wrestling.  I figure MD because Lizak is turning everybody (minus Suriano who he rode tough and wrestled tough).  I see McKee winning but he probably has the most potential to lose out of the weight classes you mentioned because he seems to wrestle to the level of his competition and his matches are usually close enough for him to win/lose at the end.

Agree Barou. I don't see JJ choosing bottom. So if JJ can get the takedowns that will really limit Lizak. If JJ gets taken down though he could be in trouble. I think Ruschell will beat Short. I haven't been impressed by Short this year, but that could just be me.
I feel like your predictions are accurate though. Just feel UW will win at least one of those matches maybe two which swings the dual.

The Short as a 7th or 8th grader at the Bay ? or the Short that lost to Jonnie D at the Cheesehead 1-0 on a ride out? Short should be the favorite at this  point he has better hand  fighting  skills and converts 68% of is leg attacks . I Like Tj on top, way better rider, this is really a good matchup , very contrasting styles . The money would be on TJ the odds would be on Short.

I'm a big fan of Jimenez.....but lets be a bit realistic here.  I think reality is that he needs a lot of things to go his way to get one of two versus Lizak or Lambert..............probably will come up short against both.  Lizak is a hammer.
Just my opinion, hope I am proved wrong.

Hopeful for a nice bounce back dual today. We've had a couple of these bad road trip starts in my time, and it actually loosened us up and we wrestled a lot better in the Sunday dual. Sounds like the lineup should be at full strength, or at least that was Barry's hope after the Friday dual. Hopefully everyone stayed healthy and the guys are ready to put points on the board. Should be a lot of great matches.

Title: Re: MN/WI
Post by: wrastle63 on January 15, 2017, 09:00:05 PM
184- Ritter wrestled their backup. Looked ok for his first match back, little sluggish on bottom.
197- Ricky hung with Pfarr and kept it to a decision.
HwT- Connor beat Kroells for the third time this year. Hard to beat a good wrestler 3 straight. Wish he would have opened up more though.
125- Johnny lost to Lizak 2-0. Wrestled very well almost had a few takedowns. Also was able to hold his own on the mat.
133- Stickley got caught in a cradle and pinned.
141-martin just can't get going on his feet still don't know if he's back yet from that sickness.
149-crone started slow then piled it on in the third like usual for a major.
157- Ruschell beat the #9 wrestler in Short. Rode him very hard. Called the upset :)
165- Jordan controlled the match but wish he would have been aggressive in 3rd and went for major.
174- Christensen looked good for first two periods and in the third he gassed and got beat.
Lost 18-15 each team won 5 matches came down to bonus points.

Right on the front page of their site... or on their Facebook page or Twitter feed. It only appears that the Badgers don't try to promote the team if you ignore everything that they do do to promote the team...

http://www.uwbadgers.com/index.aspx?path=wrestling

I only caught the last four weights on BTN Plus. 149- Crone was down 3-2 and came back to win by major in the last minute with a takedown and two turns. 157- The ref almost gave the match to Short when calling a stalemate on an almost sure takedown for Ruschell. Ruschell came back after short, shooting him off the mat for a second stall call (and the lead with riding time factored in)... Barry lost a point for arguing the stalemate call and Eggum got a warning for arguing the stall call. 165- Isaac dominated the first half of the match before coasting through to the win. Not sure why he put on the brakes. 174- Christensen went out and made the first takedown and two minute ride look easy. Pfarr came up to what usually would've been a stall call, but he turned it into a scramble for one. Christensen looked gassed from that point forward and couldn't get anything else going. 18-15 Minnesota.

My recap of the really good dual.

Also my son walked out of the dual saying the Badgers have a pretty good team. Hey, might have a fan in waiting!!!!

JJ, wrestled on the mat much better than I thought he would with Lisak
Stickley,,,well McKee went out there with a mission and got it done. Stickley is better than a fall but McKee is a very, very good true freshmon to say the least
Martin, over matched to some degree but hopefully that changes down the road
RC,,,,what can you say. He wrestles for 7 minutes
TJ,,,,nice pressure and just a match up problem for Short because,,,well the name of short ;D
I wish Zeke would have put his foot down more,,,I think a major or more was in the cards for him
74,,,,,toss up match and it came down to who had the most at the end
Ritter looked good at times, alittle rusty but in a month I think this match is a major
RR looked good at times though no rip on RR, I think it is Cox about all then Pharr then the rest of the field. Pharr should talk to his parents about maybe redshirting back in the day ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Medbury,,,,Kroehl came with a plan of attack and wrestled a very smart match. Kroehls is a very good wrestler and a tough out for anyone in the country!

Over all I was very please with the foot defense of the Badgers. I think the having to weigh in twice in 3 days took its toll on the Badger team and the Gophers had a full week to rest was the final straw of this dual. Making weight twice for some is a difficult thing over a weekend.

Conditioning for the most part seemed to be on MN side.  Was very disappointed in how Zeke wrestled.  1st and 2nd period gave up easy escapes with about 25 seconds left with minimal attempt to ride and no real effort to get a take down at the end.  Match shouldn't have been that close.  Jimenez looked very good.  Most badgers looked really good on top with the rides.  Not so much on the bottom though.  Eli shot in but left his head by his knee... oops.  Crone was impressive in the 3rd.  Martin looked out of his league (conditioning?).  TJ wrestled awesome, nice win.  RC gassed out awful early (conditioning?).  RR looked small for Pfarr but wrestled hard.

Kroells is a good wrestler but Medberry is supposed to be a great one.   He shouldn't be satisfied with a dancing bear decision over the likes of Kroells.  Medberry should setup shots from his feet and take them.

Duke's undersized HW, Kasper, is a tazmanian devil who could upset Medberry at the the NCAAs.   Kasper beat Kroells convincingly in the Southern SCuffle.  Medberry is bigger and stronger this year, but he looks less active to me.  I think he needs to not play it safe; he
should push himself to dominate every match, including good wrestlers like Kroells.

Medberry is not wrestling at the level of last year's Gwiz, and Medberry has the talent of a Gwiz, IMO.

Not saying it was this but some opponents in a tournament vs a dual meet may have a different game plan. An opponent trying to win to advance in a tournament may open up (exposing themselves) vs a dual where they may work to keep it close (team wise).

Medberry has been pretty hot all year.

That's always the unknown question.    I think Ryan Christensen looks too lean at 174, but just a guess.

Ritter was limping badly after the match, hope his knee is OK.   But I bet RC would be better at 184.

It also doesn't help that Medberry has wrestled him three times already. When you wrestle a good wrestler it seems like it always gets closer and closer.

I'm offering tough love from my couch.    BTW, I don't think wrestlers open-up at tourneys, I think they are more concerned about advancing.     In this MN dual, WI needed bonus points and Medberry played it safe.

Ya, a fair point.   But I didn't see any attempts to setup shots.    Medberry also didn 't even try to ride Kroells, he let him escape and resumed the dance.

I think Medberry is capable of more and he shouldn't worry about losing.

Disregard all matches other than top ten talent.  The dropoff at heavyweight is huge.  Also, very early in the season is not a good indicator.    I'm disappointed with the MN duel.  Lets see if he scores a lot against Nevilles at Penn State.     I want Medberry to win a national title.   He has a shot, if a long shot.  He has to get better between now and then, because his competition will.

It's about aggression.   Medberry didn't not wrestle with Penn State aggression.   Do you think Kyle Snyder will worry about Kroells' awesome scary counter shots?   You think Gwiz is afraid of Kroells?    Medberry is a great wrestler who should attack.

We'll have to agree to disagree, and hopefully we can still be disagreeable.  I mean agreeable.

Completely agree he needs to be more aggressive. Was just saying it doesn't surprise me that the score was closer. No way that it should be a 1 point match though. He coasted kinda like Zeke has been.

Watch 225 pound Kasper take down Kroells.  He wasn't afraid of Kroells' hips.  He went right after him and took him down several times.  Why was Medberry wrestling scared?

We will fight them on the beaches!  Will fight them in the air, the land and the sea!

I don't know if that source is wrong or Kasper was bigger.    The announcer for the scuffle said he weighed in at 220;  I generously bumped him up to 225.    He is a lean guy who wrestled 197 last year.  He still looks like a slightly bigger 197.

Michael Boykins, a good 197 pounder for NC State last year, bumped up to heavyweight and he looks 250.   It's possible to put on 50 pounds.   But Kasper is a lean, mean wrestling machine.     I will look into this and even admit if I am wrong, but I know 250 and that ain't Kasper.

Quote from: bigoil on January 16, 2017, 05:23:56 PMKasper responded to the article on Twitter to correct it. They had him at 215 and he said he is 250#.

Then he was joking.   He weighed in at the Scuffle at 220.  He competed last summer at 215.     If you see him standing next to the other heavyweights, he is clearly very small.  Kroell is probably around 250.

I've been watching Kasper's available matches online.  He's really good.    Medberry doesn't want Kasper in his half of the NCAA brackets, I'll tell you that much.

I know Medberry has handled Ty Walz twice early this season.   Good.  I think he needs to push himself to high pace to compete for a title.   I don't worry so much about Zeke winning close matches, that's his game.   I think Medberry is at his best forcing opponent to wrestle hard for 7 minutes.   Certainly he'll have to do that himself to keep up with Snyder and Kasper.

Well shiver me timbers.   inappropriate term5 happens, I guess.   Looks like he got pinned in about a minute.    Well, he's #7 HW now, and looks like a terror.
