Big Ten Wrestling Pre-Seeds Announced
Penn State paces conference teams with four top-seeded wrestlers

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced the preliminary seeds for the 2022 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 5-6 at Nebraska. Six schools boast at least one top-seeded wrestler, with Penn State leading the way with four No. 1 seeds. The pre-seeds, as voted on by the conference's coaches, rank 14 starters in all 10 weight classes.

The Nittany Lions boast four top-seeded wrestlers, with 133-pounder Roman Bravo-Young, 141-pounder Nick Lee, 174-pounder Carter Starocci and 184-pounder Aaron Brooks. Michigan's Nick Suriano (125), Minnesota's Gable Steveson (285), Nebraska's Eric Schultz (197), Northwestern's Ryan Deakin (157), along with Ohio State's Sammy Sasso (149) and Carson Kharchla (165) round out the group of top-ranked grapplers.
This year's field contains a combined 18 Big Ten individual championships (12 wrestlers) and six NCAA individual championships (six wrestlers).

Minnesota's Brayton Lee is not listed at 157. If he is indeed out, there is probably 1 less Big Ten allocation at that weight.

If the seeds hold that is a tough draw for Garrett and lots of interesting potential matchups.

Barnett vs Ayala quarterfinal - Barnett vs Hildebrandt semi
Zargo vs Duncan rematch in the first round
Gomez vs Bartlett quarterfinal (have not wrestled) - Gomez vs Lovett rematch in semis - Gomez vs Sasso, Murin or Thomas in the final (how only wrestled Thomas)
Hamiti vs Marinelli rematch in semis - Hamiti vs Kharchla final
Weiler vs Malczewski in the first round (have not wrestled)
Amos path to final would be Hoffman in the first round (have not wrestled) - rematch with Schultz in the quarters and a rematch with Warner or wrestle Brucki in the semis

Minnesota's Brayton Lee is not listed at 157. If he is indeed out, there is probably 1 less Big Ten allocation at that weight.

He is definitely out for the year and he was not included in the RPI or coaches poll that was included with the the NCAA allocations so he would not have been allocated a qualifying spot.

Each qualifying tournament was awarded pre-allocations to the national tournament based on regular season performance by conference wrestlers through February 20. The pre-allocations are determined using a sliding scale of a .700 winning percentage, top 30 coaches' rank and top 30 ratings percentage index (RPI) with a maximum of 29 pre-allocations per weight class.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his conference tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class.  Each conference was awarded a minimum of one automatic bid per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds.  NCAA championship spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at conference tournaments based solely on place-finish.

So Big Ten 157 allocations should remain at 7?

I believe so.

The Big 10 allocations at 157 should be for the following:

Deakin
Young
Robb
Coleman
Lewan
Saldate
Model

Berge would certainly be expected to take one of those spots so 1 or more of those 7 will likely need a wild card to get in.

133: 10 / 11
141: 7 / 8

I think Zargo wrestles up and I have hope for the other two. Let's see, Go Badgers!

Trent Hilger, a multi-time All-American, is a 7-seed.   Only in the Big 10.....   Go Badgers!!

Based on Pre-Seeds and NCAA Allocations per Conf, the only Badgers that need to wrestle higher than their seed to qualify are McNally, Zargo, and Burwick (unless I missed someone). Everyone else needs to only finish at what the were seeded.  It's probably been awhile since the team sat in that position.

A possibility of 10 qualifiers. I cannot recall the last Badger lineup where that was the case.

McNally and Burwick have qualified before so not a stretch to think they could wrestle above their seed in to a qualifying spot. Burwick has a 31 RPI and a 30 coaches rank and McNally has a 32 RPI and a 30 coaches rank so their shot at a wild card is very low and the lowest on the team. There is a full listing of the RPI and coaches rank below which would give a pretty good idea of each of their changes at a wild card.

I fully expect Zargo to wrestle into a qualifying spot but if he does not he is in good shape for a wild card. He has a 10 RPI and a 19 in the coaches poll. His improvement this season has been very impressive. Probably the most improved on the team and I love the trajectory of his matches and his season. His losses are to #2, #3 twice, #4, #7, #12, #18 and to #33 Tal-Shahar. I would be very surprised if he looses to Tal-Shahar again, he can absolutely beat Bergeland and I would not count him out against any of them.

Wrestler/RPI/Coaches Poll
Barnett/14/5
Burwick/31/30
Zargo/10/19
Gomez/4/5

Hamiti/2/6
McNally/32/30
Weiler/23/30
Amos /26/21
Hilger/9/11
