Cons. Round 1 - Taylor Lamont (Wisconsin) 9-13 received a bye () (Bye)
Lamont loses 5-2. Heilmann rode him the whole 2nd period and ended riding him out once he got a TD in the 3rd.
Zargo!! Beats 6 seed Pucino from Illinois 8-4
141
Champ. Round 1 - Joseph Zargo (Wisconsin) 10-10 won by decision over Danny Pucino (Illinois) 14-9 (Dec 8-4)
Nice win by Joe!

174
Champ. Round 1 - Bailee O`Reilly (Minnesota) 16-3 won by major decision over Josh Otto (Wisconsin) 6-15 (MD 9-0)
184
Champ. Round 1 - Lenny Pinto (Nebraska) 20-7 won by fall over Tyler Dow (Wisconsin) 7-12 (Fall 1:46)

285
Champ. Round 1 - Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) 15-6 won by fall over Ryan Vasbinder (Michigan State) 15-13 (Fall 3:50)
Tough loss for Braxton. He was up 2-0 and on top in the middle of the third, but Foy got a penalty point and then escape sending it to SV. What was the penalty?

Illegal move. He had Foy's ankle in his armpit, and stepped across for an inside trip. I don't think I've ever seen that called before.
125
Eric Barnett (17-6) place is unknown and scored 3.0 team points.
Champ. Round 1 - Eric Barnett (Wisconsin) 17-6 won by fall over Maximo Renteria (Illinois) 4-12 (Fall 4:09)
Quarterfinal - Patrick McKee (Minnesota) 12-4 won by fall over Eric Barnett (Wisconsin) 17-6 (Fall 4:36)
Barnett gets stuck.
The Badgers are really tearing it up today! I see 7-8 AA's in a couple weeks!!!
As a Bono defender I must admit, they are wrestling like crap today.

I see Hamiti and Barnett as likely AAs, but not sure we should expect much more. After seeing Gomez hobble around today, I just don't see him AAing this year. He is in obvious pain.
Not looking great so far. Lets see how much grit these guys have coming thru on the backside.
I'm assuming the chances of Gomez wrestling his next match are 50/50. And after that even less.

Champ. Round 1 - Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) 15-6 won by fall over Ryan Vasbinder (Michigan State) 15-13 (Fall 3:50)
141
Joseph Zargo (10-11) place is unknown and scored 1.0 team points.
Champ. Round 1 - Joseph Zargo (Wisconsin) 10-11 won by decision over Danny Pucino (Illinois) 14-9 (Dec 8-4)
Quarterfinal - Brock Hardy (Nebraska) 26-4 won by major decision over Joseph Zargo (Wisconsin) 10-11 (MD 12-0)
Wow, Hilger! Comes out on top in 50/50 scramble in Sudden Victory and knocks off the higher seeded Davidson.
Hilger has never seemed to be able to break thru whenever he's wrestled someone in the Top 5. Hopefully this will give him some momentum!
Great win by Trent!
Burwick two losses and out, just saying
THHOOOORRR!!!

You are more optimistic than me that we'll see Gomez. I give him less than a 1% chance of wrestling another match this weekend as he is clearly in pain and there is nothing to be gained by wrestling more.
Otto just lost and is eliminated from the tournament.
7 Badgers in Consolation Round of 12.
If they win they qualify for the NCAAs.
A loss would put them in the 9th place bracket.

He's being sarcastic. That's the most value some can bring to the board.
I don't see any ninth place brackets on Trackwrestling like I have seen in years past. If anyone sees them up somewhere, please post a link.
Are the four losers of the consolation quarterfinals all in contention for the 9th spot? So assuming 14 wrestlers in a bracket only two wrestlers are completely eliminated from a top 9 placement for each of the weights with at least 9 allocations, correct?
Lamont lost to Brody Teske 4-1 and he'll wrestle for 9th place.
Zargo is in! Zargo with a nice win over Rooks.

Apparently, Gomez was first assessed a penalty for a hard mat return or mat slam and then after the Maryland wrestler was down for a while, they must have decided to DQ Gomez. The Maryland wrestler advanced. I'm really surprised that Gomez even wrestled as he had little to gain and more to lose. I think as long as he wrestled one match he is considered a lock as an at-large, and this DQ probably hurts his seeding even more and I wonder if some might withhold voting for him as an at-large based on his conduct during this match.
Model loses and now will wrestle for 9th or 10th place as there are ten allocations at 157.
I know there are some bright spots and still many matches to go, but it seems like it's been a pretty nasty tournament so far....

It was a double leg takedown, lift and came down on his ribs. MD coach wanted to get into with Reader.
Other than Gomez not performing as expected due to injury, the results are about as expected so far.

Have to finish strong for that to be the case but yes. Zargo above seed is nice.
What a joke! Kid landed flat on his back. No way he was hurt, but Med Forfeited his next match. Coaches were looking at his wrapped knee. Didn't have anything to do with it. Very disappointed in Maryland!!!!

I don't understand why Amos can't score. Beat by Foy and Smith?????
Dean Hamiti looked dominant in taking out Kharchla and was named outstanding wrestler today. Way to go Dean!

Dang, tough day, no way around it..
That said;
Barnett can still outperform his seed if he wins out(seeded 4th, could get 3rd)
Lamont can still outperform his seed if he wins out (seeded 10th, could get 9th)
Zargo will outperform his seed (seeded 11th, will wrestle for 7th)
Gomez will not wrestle to seed (seeded 2nd, if he wins out he will get 9th)
Model will not wrestle to seed (seeded 9th, if he wins out will get 11th)

Dow can still outperform his seed if he wins out (seeded 10th, could get 9th)
Amos can still outperform his seed if he wins out (seeded 8th, could get 7th)
Hilger can still outperform his seed if he wins out (seeded 5th, could get 3rd)

Model can still wrestle to 9th. I believe they are calling that bracket and 11th place bracket because they will wrestle that one to 3rd because there are 10 allocations at 157 and I do not believe they will wrestle any of the other brackets to 3rd.
5 have wrestled into the NCAA's and they still have a shot to wrestle in 4 more. Zargo, Gomez and Dow need to go 2-0 and Model needs to win his first match and it does not matter if he wins the 9th place match.

Other than Gomez, the results are for the most part as expected. The top teams in the big 10 have more talent overall. If we are going to expect to compete with the top teams (PSU, Iowa, OSU, etc), we will have to start recruiting like them.

Noon CST
Gomez is out. Medical Default.
UW's 2022-23 season will be remembered as "Gomez - What If?"
It's clear he's not at "100 percent" whatever that means even in spite of a two-week layoff. He's been dealing with the same injury all season and it's affected his performance with the latest demonstration in the B1G meet and seems an injury that's going to require further medical treatment after the season to fully heal. Give him credit for trying to fight through it but you can see how frustrating it is for all parties involved. You can game out all the What Ifs he's fully healthy, how that would have boosted UW in the standings along with all the Badgers would have won this season if that were true.
But if it's any consolation, this weekend simply joins a long, long list of woulda, coulda, shouldas, when it comes to the UW wrestling program. I mean, it's only been three years since Wick didn't even compete in 2020 B1G meet due to illness (we presume) when UW had a shot of top five finish and there's a lot more beyond that of Badger wrestlers just not getting the job done in B1G or NCAA tournaments for whatever reason no matter who the fricken coach is so he shouldn't feel alone in that regard. All the pieces never in one place at the same time. It's basically the program's motto
Joe Zargo wins his 7th place match - Jake Bergeland med forfeits

His shot frequency is way better than last season. Just struggles finishing. I see progress, but would love to see tons more. He loses too many close matches. Even more evident is he loses too many matches in the last 30 seconds of the 3rd.
Still not sure 197 is his ideal weight. Love the kid though. Want nothing but the best for him.

What would his other weight be? 285? The spot will open up next year but he will need to weigh at least 235 to be competitive. Look at how big, athletic and quick all of the big ten 285s are. The top guys range from I bet 240-260. I think Hilger is around 240 and he looks slightly smaller than most of the guys he wrestles. Can Amos put on 40 lbs of muscle/mass in a year? I don't see it on his frame. NCAA needs a 220 class for guys just like him and all the other 195 and still growing and 220 lb high school wrestlers.
Model should be qualified for the NCAAs now - 10 qualifiers at that weight.

Unfortunately I don't think there is an ideal NCAA weight for him. I think his international weight is most suited for him to be at his peak (97 kg or 214 pounds). I truly hope I am wrong. I see definite growth from last year, but he still doesn't seem to be the same guy vs. when I see him wrestle international styles.

I'm not going to rip on a college kid, but I am sure Nebraska will be recruiting over Burwick to try and upgrade a weight that did not qualify for NCAA. Again a lot of commotion over nothing.

But he and his fans and UNL had no problem ripping UW did they? And stir up a lot of crap that just turned out to be just a big distraction. Maybe next time they'll back up their big mouths with results.

There are times in life to be deliberately bigger than "small" people. This is one of them.

Exactly.
I love that Amos and Barnett avenged losses, and to MN doesn't hurt :)
Barnett and McKee is always must watch.

thanks for sharing that. I see why the call, he left his feet and I think that is part of the rule. Stinks because he even rolled the shoulder away to not slam the shoulder into the guy.
Congratulations Dean H - Big Ten Champion
Big congrats to Dean Hamiti, your 2023 165-pound B1G Champion!
Great ride in the third period.
That was awesome.

If you think I'm trash talking, I'm not. If certain people are going to engage in smear campaign against the UW program and trying to throw mud on the coaching staff and the school with the assumption that "you'll regret what you're missing" then they deserved to be called out in my opinion.
Haines win along with Hamiti's pretty much clinches it for Penn State
DJ was phenomenal this weekend.

87 Total Allocations
I know there's a lot of understandable grumbling about the need to keep the best WI talent in WI. But if I perused that list correctly, two of those 87 athletes were WIAA wrestlers and they both qualified in Badger singlets.
It's interesting that a lot of the success WI high school kids seem to have comes outside the Big Ten. I think of Mizz a lot right now but Keckeisen at UNI... Buchanen at Wyoming... Dieringer at OK State... Monk at South(North?) Dakota State... I'm positive that I'm missing others. The Big Ten is such a grind, you gotta respect all the guys who go that route, but I wonder if some of the desire to leave the state to wrestle involves competing somewhere other than the Big Ten

I don't know. I am watching the Big 12 tournament and you have a marque matchup involving a Wisconsin native, and the arena is empty. If I'm a top recruit, I would much rather wrestle in the Big Ten.
I've been saying this for years and its a theory I truly believe in... there is a big difference between a Division 1 wrestler and a Big 10 wrestler. Every case is different but not everyone that has success at the D1 level could do the same with the grind of the Big 10 schedule. Call it an opinion but there are a lot of facts to back it up.
I totally agree that the Big Ten is a different animal. It's a meat grinder....very similar to the SEC in football as far as talent that is way ahead of the rest of the country.
It would make sense that some WI kids might look outside the Big Ten to compete at the D1 level.

Why if you want to be the best would you leave the best? That is why the SEC dominates. Those kids want to play at the highest level. It doesn't seem to hurt the Penn St and Iowa wrestlers that they have to compete at the highest level.
There are easier paths, and some take them.
You have a better chance of making the NCAA tournament from outside of the Big 10.
Then, once there, let the dice roll.

The 2022 Iowa team suggests it may. You can get hurt Wrestling anyone...but B1G Wrestlers seem to get beat up a bit more.

Ok...I get the slam call. Who was it that suggested he may not get an at-large bid due to his "conduct" during his match.
I mean, I'm not going to bother going back and looking as I suspect it's the same person who always comes up with these insanely bad takes, but that's absurd. Gomez was trying to plant him so he couldn't roll through.
I imagine he knocked the wind out of the Maryland kid pretty good. The Maryland kid should have wrestled unless he was injured, not hurt, but not my place to speculate between the two.
Rough break for Gomez. There was a time I was hoping he'd just be on the opposite side from Yianni and MAYBE he could pull off another big move in the finals, but with his injuries, I suspect his gas tank isn't quite on F and beating Yianni a second time was always a looong shot.
He looked like he was moving better in that Maryland match despite that less than 1% chance to wrestle. So hopefully with 2 more weeks, he's that much healthier.
Beyond that, Barnett, Hamiti and maybe Hillger could be AAs. Hillger looked good this weekend. Won't beat the top guys like Kerk, Cass or Parris(though, I believe he broke through and got a couple TDs on him...that's not nothing). Though it was disappointing to see him lose to Orndorff.
