NWCA Release
Heavyweights Walz, Medbery will battle at 51st All-Star Classic in Cleveland

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- Cleveland native Ty Walz of Virginia Tech has agreed to face Wisconsin All-American Connor Medbery at 285 pounds in 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

The event, presented by The Brewer-Garrett Company and hosted by the Wrestlers in Business Network, has served as the major kick-off event for the wrestling season since becoming and early-season event. In 2012, the event moved to the first weekend of the major college wrestling calendar and has been a fixture ever since.

Walz, a graduate of nearby St. Edward High School in Lakewood, is a rising senior whose fourth-place finish at 285 pounds last season helped the Hokies to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division I Championships in New York City. A two-time All-American, Walz was an Ohio state champion at St. Edward, one of the top high school wrestling programs in the nation.

Medbery, a native of Loveland, Colo., is a three-time NCAA qualifier and a returning All-American. He finished fourth at 285 pounds in 2015 but redshirted last season to try to make the U.S. Olympic wrestling team in freestyle wrestling. While he didn't make the team, he did travel to Rio de Janeiro as the training partner for two-time Olympian Tervel Dlagnev. A graduate of Loveland High School, Medbery won three Colorado 5A state championships, finishing his last three seasons with a combined 125-0 record.

The two have only met once on the college mats, a 2-1 Medbery win in the third-place match at the 2014 Midlands.

"These two wrestlers are big and powerful and exciting to watch," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Last year, we saw Ty Walz move like a little guy and score some quick takedowns, but also powerful ones. Connor Medbery has been one of the most active upperweights since he was a champion high school wrestler. This should be a fun match for the fans in Cleveland to enjoy, although I think most of the crowd will likely be pulling for their local boy."

This will be Walz's second-straight appearance at the All-Star Classic and the fourth straight year Virginia Tech has been represented in the event. Walz topped Michigan's Adam Coon 9-3 in last year's event in Atlanta. The Hokies are 2-4 in the event all-time with both wins coming last year -- Walz and teammate Zach Epperly.

Wisconsin last appeared in the All-Star Classic in November of 2008 and it also came at heavyweight and it also occurred in Ohio. Oklahoma State's Jared Rosholt topped Wisconsin's Kyle Massey 8-4 in Columbus on the campus of the Ohio State University.

Badger wrestlers are 11-12-1 all-time in the event with the last victory coming during the 2000-2001 season when Donny Pritzlaff defeated Iowa State's Joe Heskett 3-2 in the tiebreaker at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.

NWCA Release
Wisconsin's Isaac Jordan to return to Ohio for All-Star Classic, set to battle Missouri's Daniel Lewis

Tweet this Link: bit.ly/NWCAAllStar165

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- Mat wrestling will be at a premium as Wisconsin's Isaac Jordan and Missouri's Daniel Lewis have agreed to compete at 165 pounds at the  51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

Both Jordan and Lewis are known for the extreme proficiency of their mat work. Jordan, a returning NCAA finalist, can latch on and keep nearly anyone down while Lewis has no problem taking top against some of the nation's best wrestlers.

"This match truly has the makings of being an NCAA finals preview," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "While we know how good these athletes are on the mat, let's not forget that to be this good, you've got to be great in all positions. I think the fans in Ohio will be glad to see another native son (Jordan) come back to compete, too."

Jordan, a three-time All-American, is looking to become just the fifth Wisconsin wrestler in school history to earn All-American honors four times. He comes into the bout with a 86-12 career record including a 29-1 record last season. A three-time high school state champion, Jordan hails from Ohio wrestling powerhouse Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio where he was coached by his uncle Jeff Jordan. Father Jim is a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives and was a two-time NCAA champion at Wisconsin.

Lewis burst onto the national scene last season, finishing a stellar redshirt freshman season with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds. Lewis was the Mid-American Conference champion and the conference's freshman of the year and finished the season with a 29-6 mark. In high school, Lewis wrestled for Missouri power Blue Springs under coach Mike Hagerty. Lewis won four state championships, the first wrestler in school history to do so, and was the second wrestler in state history to win four titles at four different weights. The other was current Mizzou teammate and Olympic bronze medalist J'den Cox.

This will be the first official meeting between the two as they did not meet last season. Jordan joins teammate Connor Medbery as one of two Badgers in the event and will be the 26th wrestler from Wisconsin to compete in the event. Badger wrestlers are 11-12-1 all-time in the All-Star Classic with the last win coming from Donny Pritzlaff in 2001.

Lewis will make Missouri's 12th appearance at the All-Star Classic. Tiger wrestlers are 7-4 all-time in the event with Alan Waters earning the last victory at the 2015 All-Star Classic in Philadelphia, beating Virginia Tech's Joey Dance at 125 pounds.

Battle of Bretts: Minnesota's Pfarr, Princeton's Harner to square off at 197 pounds at 51st All-Star Classic

Tweet this Link: http://bit.ly/NWCAAllStar197

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- All-Americans Brett Pfarr of Minnesota and Brett Harner of Princeton have been confirmed to compete against one another at 197 pounds at 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

Pfarr capped a stellar 40-4 season with a third-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Harner finished the season 36-6 and earned All-American honors, finishing eighth at 197 pounds. The placement gave Princeton its first All-American under coach Chris Ayres and the program's first All-American since Greg Parker finished eighth in 2003 at 184 pounds.

"This is a dynamic matchup that shows how great the sport of wrestling can be, no matter what type of institution," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "It's a great thing for our sport when we can pair an All-American wrestler from a powerhouse program from the Big Ten and an All-American from one of the nation's most prestigious academic institutions. They also like to score points. They combined for 45 bonus victories last year."

Pfarr's length and ability on top leads to buckets of points, as evidenced by his 18 major decisions a year ago. It was also the largest number of major decisions by a Gopher wrestler in over 20 years. Harner's 15 bonus victories included two falls at the NCAA championships.

A native of LeSueur, Minn., Pfarr won a state championship as a senior at LeSueur Henderson High School and collected 191 victories in high school. Harner is a Norristown, Pa., native where he was a four-time state placewinner, finishing second as a senior. Harner's EIWA championship last season was the first by a Princeton wrestler since Parker in 2003.

Pfarr enters with an 89-19 career record, while Harner is 92-28. Pfarr will make Minnesota's 34th individual appearance in the All-Star Classic. Gopher wrestlers are 15-17-1 lifetime in the event with Scott Schiller earning the last victory in the event, an overtime win over Missouri's J'den Cox in November of 2014.

The two have not met during their college careers.

Harner is Princeton's third-ever wrestler to appear in the event and the first Tiger since 1985. He's also looking to become the first Princeton wrestler to win a match in the main event.

Johnny Orr fell to Iowa State's Joe Gibbons 7-3 in 1985 at Utah State University. The only other Princeton appearance came in 1972 when Iowa State's Ben Peterson topped Princeton's Emil Deliere by injury default.

National champs Gabe Dean, Myles Martin set for monster clash at 184 pounds at 51st All-Star Classic

Tweet this Link: http://bit.ly/NWCAAllStar184

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- When two returning NCAA champions meet in any type of wrestling event, fans tend to take notice.

So be prepared to take notice.

Two-time NCAA champion Gabe Dean of Cornell and returning NCAA champion Myles Martin of Ohio State have officially confirmed their participation at 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

Dean, a senior and three-time All-American, stands as the incumbent champion at 184 pounds, while Martin, an NCAA champion last season as a true freshman at 174 pounds, will move up to a higher weight class and face the formidable Cornell bruiser.

"There really aren't words to describe how excited we are to have such a match here in Cleveland," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "It's so rare we get to see returning NCAA champions hit at any time during the season and we've got two great ones set to tangle the very first weekend of the season. It's surely going to be memorable."

The Dean-Martin match is the first matchup of returning NCAA champions at the All-Star Classic since another Buckeye, Logan Stieber, defeated Oklahoma's Kendric Maple 6-4 in sudden victory at the November 2014 event at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Dean has been one of the most powerful and dominant wrestlers since he stepped on the scene. A third-place finisher as a freshman, Dean, a Lowell, Mich., native has dominated the competition en route to national titles each of the last two seasons. Dean's 77-3 mark over the past two years includes an impressive 49 bonus victories and contains 18 falls. Dean was a state champion as a junior at Lowell High School. His father Dave was an NCAA runner-up in 1987 for Minnesota.

Martin, a stunning champion last season as the No. 11 seed, avenged three in-season defeats to Penn State's Bo Nickal to win the 174-pound title with a thrilling 11-9 decision. Martin becomes the third wrestler with Ohio ties in the event thus far. Ohio natives Ty Walz (Virginia Tech) and Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin) are already confirmed in the event. Martin is a Penns Grove, N.J., native but attended school at McDonogh in Owings Mills, Maryland, where he was a three-time state champion and four-time National Prep finalist.

Ohio State is 10-9 all-time in the event with Nathan Tomasello earning the school's most recent win last season in Atlanta, Ga., over West Virginia's Zeke Moisey. Cornell is 6-7 all-time with Dean earning the most recent Big Red victory, a 5-2 win over Old Dominion's Jack Dechow in Philadelphia in November of 2014.

NWCA Release
NC State's Rohskopf returns to Ohio to face Michigan's Murphy in 157-pound bout at 51st All-Star Classic

Tweet this Link: http://bit.ly/NWCAAllStar157

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- With the nation's top wrestlers on display, there will be plenty for Ohio wrestling fans to cheer about at the 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

NC State's Max Rohskopf becomes the fourth wrestler with Ohio ties set to participate. The Wolfpack senior moves down to a new weight class this year and he'll tangle with 2015 All-American Brian Murphy of Michigan.

This is Rohskopf's second straight appearance in the event. He topped Oklahoma's Clark Glass 9-2 in last year's event in Atlanta.

"You've got two very dynamic wrestlers here," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Rohskopf's got length and leverage while Murphy's an outstanding athlete. We know the Ohio fans will like to see another native in the event, although I don't think it would matter much in terms of who to root for because Murphy's from 'that state up north'."

Both wrestlers missed placing at the 2016 NCAA Division I championships. Rohskopf, a big part of NC State's stellar 2015-16 season, entered as the No. 5 seed at 165 pounds but was upset early and bounced from the tournament and finished 1-2. Murphy, who was saddled with injuries for much of the season, reached the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to Kent State's Ian Miller. In the consolations, Murphy's bid to repeat at 157 pounds as an All-American was ended by Rohskopf's teammate, Tommy Gantt.

A native of Killbuck, Ohio, Rohskopf went 16-4 last season and enters the All-Star Classic with a 49-33 overall record. He's a two-time NCAA qualifier. Murphy is a three-time NCAA qualifier. He placed seventh as a sophomore and enters the event with a 59-30 career record.

Murphy hails from Carol Stream, Illinois and wrestled at national powerhouse Glenbard North. A four-time state placewinner and three-time finalist, he was also a four-time All-American in Fargo, winning the Cadet freestyle national championship in 2010.

The two have not met in college.

Rohskopf's latest appearance will be the 11th all-time at the All-Star Classic by Wolfpack wrestlers and they hold a 4-6 all-time record. Murphy will make Michigan's 37th appearance. Wolverine wrestlers are 15-18-3 all-time and have never lost a match by more than a decision.

Anthony Ashnault to make Rutgers' first appearance at 51st All-Star Classic, will face Wyoming's Bryce Meredith at 141 pounds

Tweet this Link: http://bit.ly/NWCAAllStar141

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- When Anthony Ashnault takes the mat at on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center, he'll be doing something no Rutgers wrestler has ever done -- compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic.

Ashnault, a two-time All-American, will face returning NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith of Wyoming at 141 pounds in the seventh matchup announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

"We've got two All-Americans who can put on a show," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Anthony Ashnault has been able to help his program ascend to new heights under coach Scott Goodale. We saw a tremendous run to the finals last year from Bryce Meredith and you've got two non-traditional powers putting their All-Americans into this fine event. That's a win for Cleveland and that's a win for wrestling."

Meredith transferred back to his native Wyoming after competing for N.C. State as a freshman. His run to the finals included wins over his former teammate and No. 3 seed Kevin Jack of N.C. State, No. 6 Micah Jordan of Ohio State and No. 2 Joey McKenna of Stanford. Meredith is a native of Cheyenne, Wyo., and was a four-time state champion at Central High School.

He comes into the match with a career record of 44-12 after going 29-5 last season and finishing third at the Big 12 Championships.

Ashnault has the distinction of being New Jersey's first unbeaten four-time state champion. The South Plainfield, N.J. native went 170-0 during his high school career and is already a two-time All-American. Last season, Ashnault became the first wrestler from Rutgers to win a Big Ten title, while also becoming the school's first NCAA semifinalist since 1960. He finished fourth at 141 pounds and finished last season with a 32-4 record. Ashnault is 61-12 in two seasons.

Meredith and Ashnault have not met in college competition.

For Wyoming, Meredith will be the seventh participant in school history. Wyoming last appeared in the All-Star Classic in November of 2011 with Shane Onufer (165) and Joe LeBlanc (184) both competing. LeBlanc is the only Cowboy wrestler to win a bout in the All-Star Classic, winning both his appearances in 2010 and 2011. Overall, Wyoming is 2-4 in the event.

Rutgers becomes the 104th school to add its name to the list of programs that have participated in the NWCA All-Star Classic.

NWCA Release
Missouri's Mayes, Oklahoma State's Collica to do battle again at 51st All-Star Classic

Tweet this Link: http://bit.ly/NWCAAllStar149

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- The wrestling season will start off the way it concluded for 149-pound wrestlers Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State and Lavion Mayes of Missouri.

At the 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center, Collica and Mayes will reacquaint themselves with one another in a bout that will be a rematch of the third-place match at the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships.

"We're excited to have two fantastic wrestlers from two fine programs competing here," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Both these wrestlers know one another very well and that means we can see a lot of different things to kick off the season. It's also another opportunity for Ohioans to see one of their own (Collica) compete in a big event close to home."

Mayes won two out of three bouts with Collica last season. Mayes won in a January dual meet while Collica bounced Mayes from the championship side of the bracket in New York City with a 3-2 win in the quarterfinals. Mayes would avenge the loss, beating Collica 3-2 for third place. Collica entered as the No. 11 seed.

Mayes and Collica will be facing off for the seventh time. With the series tied 3-3, Collica won two out of three when the two were freshmen competing at 141 pounds. Both wrestlers hold a pair of decisions and a fall each. They did not meet as sophomores as Collica went up to 157 pounds.

A native of Solon which is just outside of Cleveland, Collica was a three-time Ohio state champion at Solon High School. He also won a pair of USA Wrestling Junior freestyle crowns before heading to Stillwater. He'll bring an 86-29 record into the match.

Despite winning a state championship as a senior at Mascoutah High School in wrestling-rich Illinois, Mayes wasn't highly recruited, but he's become one of coach Brian Smith's most consistent and successful wrestlers, entering the match with a career record of 99-21. A three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American, Mayes went 32-3 last season and claimed the Mid-American Conference title. This season, he'll try to become the fifth Mizzou wrestler to earn at least three Division I All-American honors in a career.

Collica is the fifth wrestler with Ohio ties in the event. Ohio State is represented by Isaac Jordan and Myles Martin, while Ohio natives Ty Walz of Virginia Tech and Max Rohskopf of NC State were announced earlier this month.

Oklahoma State's inclusion will mark the 40th time in 51 events at least one Cowboy has competed. Collica will make Oklahoma State's 90th appearance in the event. Overall, Cowboy wrestlers are 43-40-6 all-time. Dean Heil and Kyle Crutchmer both competed last season and fell in Atlanta to Cody Brewer of Oklahoma and Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech.

Mayes will make Missouri's 12th appearance all-time with the last victory coming in November of 2014 when Alan Waters defeated Virginia Tech's Joey Dance at 125 pounds. Tiger wrestlers are 7-4 all-time at the All-Star Classic.

With eight weights released, 15 of the 16 athletes are returning All-Americans.

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- Two wrestlers looking to break through for their first All-American honors will tangle at the 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

Missouri junior Barlow McGhee and Campbell senior Nathan Kraisser has been announced as the competitors in the 125-pound bout.

"Both of these wrestlers have been so close to making the podium during their careers," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "This match has the potential to set the tone for each of their seasons."

McGhee, a junior from Rock Island, Illinois, fell just short of All-American honors last season, falling in the round of 12. He went 24-9 and won the Mid-American Conference championship after redshirting during the 2014-15 season. McGhee earned victories over Wyoming's Drew Templeman, Pittsburgh's L.J. Bentley and SIU Edwardsville's Freddie Rodriguez at the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships. McGhee is 45-20 in two years of varsity competition at Missouri.

Kraisser is a three-time NCAA qualifier from Ellicott City, Maryland. He spent two years at the University of North Carolina before transferring to Campbell. A Southern Conference champion last season up at 133 pound, Kraisser finished the season 34-9. He knocked off No. 16 Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers in the first round of the 2016 NCAA championships. As a freshman, Kraisser reached the NCAA quarterfinals and fell just one match short of All-American honors at 125 pounds. Kraisser's career college record stands at 92-26.

The two have never met in collegiate competition.

Kraisser is Campbell's first-ever competitor in the All-Star Classic. It also marks the second instance in the event where a school is making its first appearance. Rutgers' Anthony Ashnault will be the first Scarlet Knight wrestler to compete in the event. Kraisser is also the first Southern Conference wrestler to compete in the event since VMI's Charlie Branch lost to Cleveland State's Dan Carcelli 9-7 at 142 pounds in 1995.

"We've seen two programs represented for the first time," said Moyer. "It's a testament to what coaches Scott Goodale and Cary Kolat are doing with their programs."

McGhee will join teammates Daniel Lewis and Lavion Mayes in the event. The trio will make Missouri's 12th, 13th and 14th appearances all-time with the last victory coming in November of 2014 when Alan Waters defeated Virginia Tech's Joey Dance at 125 pounds. Tiger wrestlers are 7-4 all-time at the All-Star Classic.

The event currently features 15 returning NCAA Division I All-Americans.

Manheim, Pennsylvania --  The full card is finally set for the 51st annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 5 at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.

Ethan Ramos, a 2015 All-American from North Carolina, will face Zac Brunson, a three-time qualifier and 2016 Big Ten runner-up at 174 pounds to complete the 10-bout main event, which will feature 16 returning All-Americans, two NCAA champions and wrestlers from 16 different schools and six different conferences.

"Both competitors can put points on the board and we expect both Ethan Ramos and Zac Brunson to put on a show," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "This completes a great kick-off matchup for the sport of wrestling and for the fans in the Greater Cleveland area. We can't thank the Wrestlers in Business Network enough for their efforts in putting this great event together."

Brunson, who was a Big Ten runner-up last season and finished with a 22-5 record, will join 133-pound teammate Zane Richards in the event. A Eugene, Oregon native, Brunson was a four-time high school state champion competing at four different weights for Churchill High School. Brunson was also a five-time All-American at the USA Wrestling Cadet & Junior Nationals, winning a Junior freestyle title in 2011. Brunson holds a career record of 75-29. Entering the 2016 NCAA Championships as the No. 5 seed, Brunson defeated Stanford's Keaton Subjeck and Minnesota's Nick Wanzek, but was upset by Indiana's Nathan Jackson and eliminated by Missouri's Blaise Butler.

Ramos, an All-American as a freshman in 2015, enters with a 53-16 record in two years of varsity competition in Chapel Hill. As a No. 15 seed, Ramos finished sixth in 2015 at 165 pounds. He moved up to 174 pounds last season and wrestled well, entering the 2016 NCAA Championships as the No. 4 seed with a 22-5 record. Ramos failed to place as he was upset in the first round and fell to All-American Alex Meyer of Iowa in the consolations.

Ramos is a Hawthorne, N.J., native and was a state champion in the rugged one-class New Jersey high school state tournament. He also claimed an NHSCA Junior championship and was second at FloNationals.

Along with Richards, Brunson will be making Illinois' 21th all-time appearance in the event. Illini wrestlers hold a 10-8 record in the dual with one no contest. The last time Illini wrestlers were represented came in 2013 when Jesse Delgado (125), B.J. Futrell (141) and Jordan Blanton (174) all competed in November of 2012 at American University in Washington, D.C.

Ramos will be making North Carolina's first appearance in the event since November of 2005 when heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky fell to Harvard's Bode Ogunwole 3-2. The last Tar Heel win came in 1995 when Stan Banks defeated Wyoming's Reese Andy 4-3 at 177 pounds. North Carolina is 7-7 all-time in the event.
