D1 145 Williams vs Nelson / Powell vs Schmid
Time for the underclassmen to step it up. Sectional Finals was a battle between powell/williams.
A headlock and 5 points very early on, is all that separated the national R/G champion Nelson and the young man from Verona, this one from Verona's got the speed of Cal Jensen..I'm quite excited to see this young man who beat Joey earlier this yr. he has to be quite a specimen that's all I can say... I'm also very surprised that there can possible be 4 wrestlers of thick caliber in the same bracket, the same yr...unreal...as for the young stud from Sun P, forget it, he's living on another Planet...
From top to bottom 106 in D1 might be one of the toughest brackets out there.

Yeah... some foolish person might argue that we shouldn't drive decisions about a sport based on what's best for the 16 best kids at a given weight. They might be so crazy as to say that we look at the bigger picture of filling a team, having more parity, having duals that aren't an embarrassment to HS sports, allowing a full JV to be built and flourish among most/all programs. Don't know who would make any of those arguments, but someone might.

Or some might argue that small school like Random Lake are doing a great job fielding teams and being successful doing it....cutting weight classes is lazy mans way of filling teams. It only strengthens stronger teams...does not guarantee less forfeits and will undoubtedly hurt the lowest weight class.
CLC....doesn't your junior class have like 12 boys in entire school?
Ghetto will base argument on forfeits from regionals.....he should be arguing for super sectional and support for Jv state....not cutting opportunities for high school kids. Should be arguing for more flexibility in scheduling to match teams up better.
Man there are some tough brackets in D1. I'm not making this argument here.

No offense intended here Aaron but this talk about opportunity is a weak and unfounded perception here is why;
Every wrestler has many
opportunities, they compete on weekly basis and have the off season
opportunity to prepare and improve they have the entire season of
opportunities to better themselves. They have the
opportunity wrestle in Conference, they have the
opportunity to win at Regionals and if they have the commitment, dedication the drive to take advantage of all the
opportunities to improve and get good enough to advance then you have the
opportunity to advance to the State Tournament.
The
opportunity to advance to the State Tournament is not
Guaranteed the path has plenty of
opportunity and those would not diminish if the weight classes were reduced to align with College weight classes.
Of course I guess we could just hand everyone a trophy at the Regionals and make them ALL State Champions? ::)
Reducing Weight Classes is great
opportunity to improve the competitive level of the sport and actually with the JV program expansion to include 8th grade would increase the
opportunities.

Ramjet question for you. When you say align with college wts are you saying you think lightest wt class should be around 125lbs?????Iam partial to the light wts(i have a son in the Div1 106lbs state bracket) iam not going to say its the toughest bracket but going to say it definately looks awful competitive, what are we suppose to tell these 16 kids and the 16 kids at 113/120."Iam sorry but you guys are really good but you are just too small to participate! ???
Trever certainly does have a tough match..hoping to send him the hometown boy get a shot at each out her...
Now that I've obsessed over the brackets, I'm gonna start an argument and just say it.

I did not say that I just said your argument for
opportunity is weak but you always try and turn it around that "you are against the the kids" argument.
It could easily be argued that cutting weight classes could open
more opportunity in that it would force schools to look closer at Jr Varsity and get kids development so later on they can compete at higher level in the later years and it would also include more matches for middle school and Jr Varsity. But you would rather try and turn this into some emotional weak argument that kids will be hurt by this you are wrong plain and simple.
I also would like to know where you were when the middle weights was cut few years ago and lost of kids lost so called opportunity? Its a weak argument
the opportunity is still there just at different weight.
Nelson will pin Williams at 145.

Your analysis is accurate as your spelling :D
Insider info: Williams had only been wrestling for 2.5 weeks prior to Mt Horeb. He dislocated his kneecap at Preseason Nationals. Not making excuses but there is a reason they wrestle matches at State and matches 2 months ago mean nothing. Keep up the negative posts...it motivates others. Schmid and Nelson are very good wrestlers. They should be because they put the work in and are Juniors. This Freshman also has put the work in and earned his way to State after a huge injury.

Won't you feel dumb when this doesn't happen. I will have to go with Wrestlinglife1 on this one and say that the pin will NOT happen. And it is a shame you had to call a shot like this to a freshman making it to state in a tough weight class. Even if Nelson gets the pin in this match, your not going to earn any respect points. And I am sure that when the smoke is cleared these two young athletes will still both be two of the best in our state. As well as the other 14 in that same bracket. Most of us will let the boys decide who wins and leave the trash talking off the forum. I just wanted to thank you because it added a little more motivation.

Not so easy...ok, set me straight...who won a What @ Fargo...
Bottom line is a freshman or sophomore making it at 145 or higher is very impressive. Not sure whay there are people saying that Nelson ranked number one is going to pin a freshman. Is is because he happens to be a good freshman? That is not the best draw Williams could have got but it is what it is. Williams will have a great opportunity to wrestle a great wrestler first round. And looking at the back side if he loses he has a great oportunity to be on the podium. One match at a time.
145 has some tough first round matches. Look at sophomore Powell, he wins his sectional and gets Schmid first round becuase he lost in the finals at sectionals to Nelson.

It's a competition. Rankings, opinions, predictions, etc. do not mean diddly squat. Nothing counts at this point, other than how the kids wrestle during each match. There will be surprises at state, just as there are every year. Let's just sit back and enjoy the wrestling, while the kids determine the reality of the situation.

D-1 126 bottom bracket is a meat grinder as well with Hornicle, Folley, Quartullo, and Kraus. The winner wouldn't have to deal with Pfarr/Jansen until the finals, but whoever comes out of that side of the bracket will be battle tested for sure! Can't wait to see it!
I pick folley to win that bracket, kid looks great this year.
I know nothing about Folley but based on another kid from that sectional, their records seem a little bit inflated. Minucci was undefeated going into sectionals and didn't make it out. Hornicle has been wrestling lights out since he got over an injury and dropped to 126. Finished 4th the last two years. All I can say is Folley better be the real deal because Hornicle definitely is.
