WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue wrestling hits the road for its first weekend doubleheader of the season, facing off with a pair of Big Ten opponents in No. 16 Wisconsin and No. 13 Minnesota.

 

The Boilermakers (4-5, 0-2 B1G) make the long trek north and will travel to Madison on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. ET before heading to Minneapolis for a Sunday afternoon matchup at 2:00 p.m. ET. Both duals will be streamed on B1G+.


PURDUE POINTS

• Redshirt-senior Kendall Coleman pushed his active dual win streak to nine after coming out on top of Illinois' Anthony Federico 8-2 last weekend. Nine wins matches last season's longest dual winning streak held by Matt Ramos (11/16/21-1/9/22).

• Ramos and Coleman (both 23) have wrestled the most matches of anyone ranked inside the top-15 at their weights. Parkers Filius (18) has the third most.

• Redshirt-sophomore Matt Ramos spent two years at Minnesota before transferring to Purdue, suffering an injury during his first season and spending the second training on an Olympic redshirt with the Gopher Wrestling Club.

• Purdue assistant A.J. Schopp worked with this Wisconsin staff at South Dakota State from 2015-17 before being hired by Ersland at Purdue. The group brought SDSU their first Big 12 Champion and Division I All-Americans.

• Player Development Associate Leroy Vega was a three-time All-American at Minnesota and was collegiate teammates with head assistant coach Luke Becker.

• The Boilermakers are outscoring their opponents by 108 in the first period and have scored first in 187 of their 344 matches thus far on the season.

• Purdue head coach Tony Ersland's 74 dual wins is tied for the third most in program history with Scott Hinkel (2008-14). Ersland sits in third in Big Ten wins, home wins and road wins.

 

NUMBERS TO KNOW

• 1 - Kendall Coleman (20) and Matt Ramos (19) are both on top of their weight classes in Division I wins and are tied for second and fourth overall.

• 285 - Coleman is now 9th in program history for career takedowns with 285. He has 71 this season alone.

• 101 - Kendall Coleman surpassed 100 career matches in his 8-2 win over Illinois' Anthony Federico last week. He has the second most on the team (Filius, 129).

 

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION

  No. 16 Wisconsin (6-4, 0-3 B1G) comes into Friday's dual fresh off of last weekend's 27-6 loss to No. 8 Michigan in Ann Arbor. Like the Boilermakers, the Badgers have yet to collect a Big Ten dual win this season and are desperate to get one. Head coach Chris Bono's team has eight ranked wrestlers with three inside the top-10. Last season, the Badgers won the match with the Boilermakers 23-12 in West Lafayette.

 

No. 13 Minnesota (8-2, 1-2 B1G) last hit the mat at home against Michigan State, winning 21-11 to get their first Big Ten dual win after taking losses to Northwestern and Nebraska previously. Head coach Brandon Eggum has a wrestler ranked in every weight class and is led by No. 5 Patrick McKee at 125 pounds.

 

McKee and Ramos' top-10 showdown on Sunday will have wrestling fans salivating as the duo have yet to square off officially, but they are very undoubtedly familiar with each other. The pair used to share a wrestling room when Ramos was a member of the Minnesota program before transferring to Purdue. Purdue alumni Devin Schroder beat McKee 8-3 as one of four ranked upsets on senior day last season to help the Boilermakers to an 18-14 win over the No. 16 Golden Gophers. Ramos and Filius earned decisions late in a dual that started at 157 to help secure the win.

 

LAST TIME OUT

Purdue wrestling fell to No. 25 Illinois in its first road test of the season on Saturday night, losing 31-9 in the State Farm Center. The Boilermakers got wins from No. 9 Matt Ramos, No. 3 Kendall Coleman and Hayden Copass, but the matches in between all went in favor of the Illini. Purdue allowed bonus points in six of their seven bout losses.

 

Heavyweight Copass returned from injury and got back into the lineup last weekend where he picked up his first collegiate dual win in a 1-0 decision over Matt Wroblewski.

 

PURPLE RAIDER OPEN

Purdue sent 10 wrestlers to Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio for the Purple Raider Open last Sunday and six brought home hardware, tied for the most of any team in the tournament. Freshmen Brody Baumann and Jacob Macatangay impressed once again, each going 5-0 to take first place. Combined they accumulated 39 team points with two falls and four major decisions.

 

Redshirt-freshman Christian White took third, junior Macartney Parkinson and freshman Ike Ruble (in his collegiate debut) finished fourth and redshirt-junior Michael Leveille rounded out the placewinners in sixth at 141.

 

TITLE TYPE OF YEAR

It's been quite the run for Matt Ramos over the last few months. He has claimed titles at the Southern Scuffle, Clarion Open and a freestyle title at the U.S. Open in addition to a runner-up finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

In those four tournaments, he is 17-1 with eight bonus point wins including four tech falls and three pins. He beat four ranked opponents along the way.
