Sectional F has some issues, no doubt.

I hear the argument that there are good kids staying home from state because they are in sectional X and it is very tough at their weight. That's tough for those kids. They may not have the flexibility to move up or down, and for that reason can't be the top two in the sectional.

There is something to be said for getting kids to state from programs that are not historically ones that send kids to state. Success brings success. If a kid from a team say, in the city of Madison/Milwaukee, etc. goes to state, maybe it inspires a kid to go out for wrestling, stick with it, etc. seeing that a kid from his/her school CAN go to state.

We didn't get helped by the switches either. That's for sure.

The inclusion theory that the WIAA uses for an excuse to have weak regionals/sectionals is B.S.

well hopefully the system can be fixed in a few years

Idea for WIAA to consider for individual sectional team assignment.

Each school is assigned a score based on advancement points earned the previous state tournament.  1 point per win on championship side, 1/2 point per win on consolation side.  (Not sure if a win in placement matches matter much, but could use "wins" per side of bracket instead of "advancement points" if TrackWrestling could easily provide those numbers.)  Try to better balance those points per sectional across the state.

Once the sectionals are more balanced, consider using the previous years sectional advancement points scored to help balance the regional team allocation.

Quote from: panther93 on May 01, 2024, 12:02:31 PMI believe that the only way to change things is to have the WIAA consider Freestyle and Greco as different sports.  In reality they are as the scoring system is totally different and so is the strategy of the matches. In many areas the only people qualified or that have the knowledge to coach this would be the HS staff. Yes clubs have sprung up and are doing better than ever, yet not all can attend them.

I always feel for kids that are at the state tournament or Northern Plains and don't have a coach, or those that decide to not go as they don't practice due to not having a coach or club.

I am lucky that I have the funds to pay for my son to attend a club and also have the ability to coach my son on top of that.  I know however that there are and have been athletes in the past that have chosen to not wrestle in the off-season due to lack of funds.  It is really hard for me to sit back in the stands and watch one of my HS athletes compete out on the mat alone while also seeing great club coaches in the other corner, yet due to rules I have to.

Addition:  I'll also add the athletes that are out for spring sports that don't have time to wrestle club, yet want to let it fly in a tournament or two.

This was recently asked by the WWCA in a survey to all coaches to see what membership wanted as far as trying to get clarification of Greco/Freestyle being considered a different sport.
Yep, I was a YES vote on that.  The WWCA is trying to be proactive on this issue.

Quote from: BadgerOne on April 30, 2024, 04:39:43 PMIf Bono only lived up to his promises when he took the job, UW would be that challenger.  Bono said he'd close the borders if he got the job.  Now if UW had KOT, Keckeisen, Mesenbrink, Sinclair, Buchanan, Hopke, Mirasola, Mirasola etc., we'd be as good as any team not named Penn State.  C'mon Bono live up to your word and no more excuses.
Every new coach would like to "close the borders" and get the top talent in their state but that is not realistic. The top HS football player in the state of Wisconsin committed to Notre Dame, Mr. Basketball in the state over the last few years has gone to Duke and or North Carolina.  Heck Cael couldn't land Spencer Lee in PA and we all know that haven't had great success at 125.   Come on Fickell, Gard and Sanderson (to name a few), live up to your word, no more excuses!!
I wasn't talking about what every coach "would like to" do, but what a coach actually said.  Bono said he'd close the borders, along with turning the program into a top 5 program that would compete for trophies and apparently somebody believed this as the UW hired him over all other applicants, who I believe included both Damian Hahn and Ben Askren.  So whoever believed Bono's slick sales job made a ridiculously stupid decision.  There is such a thing as accountability.  It's even more stupid that UW extended Bono after he has overpromised and underdelivered.  And I believe Bono is set to make over $2 million for swinging and missing on nearly every high end recruit from the state.   Wisconsin has plenty of money to burn.  Its not UW's lack of money which has plunged them into this mess, but their basic stupidity.

Well state is seeded.  How many of the 28 qualifiers will be 14-16 seeds?  Is the preseason over/under 22.5?
