Monk Aims for 100th Career Win at Bison Open
http://www.gobison.com/news/2013/11/8/WR_1108134302.aspx
Looks like a good amount of Wisconsin guys here.
Some sour news - Scherky just messaged me that he injured his knee in his quarterfinal match. He finished it and won 6-1, but had to default out. Definitely LCL and possible ACL tear. Hope the MRI comes back with better news.
http://www.gobison.com/news/2013/11/12/WR_1112134640.aspx
Congrats
Thanks, Harley! It was great to see Steven get his 100th career win in front of a home crowd on the Bison mat. It is a young team this season with some outstanding red-shirt freshman. It was cool to see five Wisconsin natives start two weeks ago against Missouri. It is just a great group of wrestlers on and off the mat.
Best of luck to Zach on his new team this season!
The family and I traveled to Fargo to watch the Bison Open a couple of weekends ago. Congrats to Steven Monk on winning the 165lb. title. It was so nice to watch him and the many other Wisconsin kids that now currently wrestle for NDSU! Watching Steven dominate from the top position, made me appreciate all the work he must have put in. At one point I actually felt sorry for his opponents when he scored a takedown on them because I knew their battle was just beginning. Caught myself several times elbowing my son and pointing to Steven and saying thats what a complete wrestler looks like. (I also found myself wondering if Mr. Weber happens to mention to Mr. Monk in practice if he would happen to know who currently holds the Wiscosin high school record for most career victories...212 is more than 208 right? Or shouldn't a 125lber mess with a 165lber?)
Another point that became obvious throughout the day was, what a difference depth in a line-up can make. Minnesota not only had the most match-ups versus their fellow wrestlers but by far the most brutal match-ups. It would have been hard to guess that the 149lb finals match was a match between teammates. Talk about a physical bout. NDSU coaches also had to be pleased with the competiveness between "starters" and red-shirts or " back-ups". With several victories coming from non-starters. (Bengston is the real deal).

OREM, Utah -- North Dakota State University 157-pound redshirt freshman Matt Gray (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Tuesday by the league.
Gray had a big weekend for NDSU at Northern Illinois' Northern Duals last Saturday as he went a perfect 2-0 with a first-period fall over a ranked foe.
Gray opened up his run at the Northern Duals with a 7-5 decision over Jarrett Jensen of No. 17 Northern Iowa. He then helped the Bison defeat NIU in the final dual of the day by pinning Andrew Morse, who was ranked 11th in the country in last week's AWN poll, in just 1:16. Gray's pin over Morse sparked the Bison, as they went on to win four consecutive matches in their 21-16 come-from-behind victory over the Huskies.
The conference honor is Gray's first of his career and with the two wins he improves to 2-1 on the young season
Matts a great kid. No one worked harder to get where Matt is today than Matt. Great dad also! Congrats Mathew!
NDSU Wrestling Splits at Northern Illinois

NDSU (1-2) dropped six of the 10 matches to Northern Iowa, with four of those coming to Panther wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in the nation. The Bison won three straight matches between 157 and 174 pounds, with freshman Matt Gray earning a 7-5 decision over Jarrett Jensen at 157 to get NDSU started.
No. 5-ranked Steven Monk posted a 4-2 overtime decision over No. 15-ranked Cooper Moore at 165 pounds, and No. 19-ranked Hayden Zillmer recorded a 5-1 decision for NDSU over No. 18 Cody Caldwell at 174. Sophomore heavyweight Evan Knutson won the final match of the day for the Bison, taking a 6-4 decision over UNI's Blaize Cabell.
Northern Illinois opened up an 11-3 lead on NDSU in the day's final dual, but Gray registered a first-period pin of Andrew Morse – ranked No. 11 in the nation at 157 pounds – to spark the Bison. Monk, Zillmer and 184-pound junior Kurtis Julson followed up with decisions to build an 18-11 lead for NDSU.
Leading 18-16 heading into the final match against the Huskies, Knutson held on for a 4-3 decision over Jarred Torrence on riding time advantage following the second tiebreaker period.
Gray, Monk, Zillmer and Knutson all went 2-0 for NDSU on the day.
NDSU will travel to Brookings, S.D., on Nov. 30 for a non-conference dual with South Dakota State.

Moreno, ranked sixth by WIN Magazine, lost 6-2 to the No. 4 Monk. During last season's dual between the clubs, Moreno was pinned by Monk, but avenged that loss by pinning Monk at the ASICS University Nationals last summer in Akron, Ohio.

A season long documentary of Steven Monk and the Bison Wrestling Team. For a wrestler that was never really recruited to a Division 1 school...the community of Fargo/North Dakota State gave Steven a chance on the mat. The Bison's are a great team of wrestlers on and off the mat. For any wrestler that has hopes and dreams of wrestling Division 1, don't give up. If the links will not come up they are on "youtube" Steven Monk on the Brink.

Sincerely,

Thanks, Tom for always supporting the Bison's and all of the Wisconsin kids on this team. I was ahead of you for once :D Steven just graduated from NDSU, he begins Graduate School in January. Proud parents here! He has worked hard in wrestling and he never wanted to give up his 3 sports in High School to focus on just this sport. He is coming down the home stretch with his college wrestling.

And mom too ( I think she might still scan from time to time) :)
Thanks! It was grind, but no matter what color singlet our Wisconsin natives have on, we enjoy watching and supporting them.
MNbadger...Thanks for posting that. I save all those articles neatly in a book.
BigG...dad only reads Trackwrestling. Mom has been a Forum user since its birth many years ago!
My fault. I thought you were dad. :-[
Awesome job by a Wisconsin kid. Just grinds away. Love that.
I won a bet with him (not money, just a gentleman's bet). I am a fan and he made me a bigger one when he beat an Iowa wrestler!!!!!!!!!!
Nick Moore (Iowa State) has many wrestling accolades in all three styles. Steven had a lot of weight lifted off his shoulders going into Midlands. He was student teaching this semester, graduated from NDSU two weeks ago, and he had to enroll and get accepted into Grad School to stay eligible. His focus was nothing but wrestling. NDSU only brought 8 scoring wrestlers. The team battled and represented their school with pride.
Glad it was just a gentleman's bet. Nothing wrong when the winner receives nothing but respect!
Certainly earned that! Then some. I was hollerin' at the TV.

No. 15 Wisconsin Tops NDSU Wrestling
by KVRR Sports
February 02, 2014
Third-ranked Steven Monk extended his match-winning streak to 15 for the Bison, but the No. 20/21 North Dakota State wrestling team fell to the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers, 23-17, in a nonconference dual Sunday, Feb. 2, at the UW Field House.
The Bison (7-4) ended a five-match dual winning streak with the loss, including their first dual loss since December, 2013.
NDSU trailed by 12 points heading into 149 pounds, before senior Tyler Diamond got the Bison on the board with an 11-5 decision over TJ Ruschell.
Monk and junior 184-pounder Kurtis Julson cut the Bison deficit to eight on two separate occasions. Monk earned a technical fall in the third period – improving his overall record this season to 22-1 – and No. 27 Julson won by a 4-3 decision to cut the score to 19-11.
Redshirt freshman No. 30 Tyler Lehmann earned a pin in the third period over Wisconsin's Timmy McCall at 197 pounds to give the Bison a chance in the final dual at 285 pounds. It was the fifth pin he has registered out of six duals he's wrestled for NDSU this season.
Trailing 19-17 in the final bout, NDSU junior No. 28 Evan Knutson kept it close initially by trailing 4-1 after the first period. No. 10 Connor Medbery of Wisconsin took over in the second period and came out with a 10-1 major decision for the Badgers to help them escape with a hard-fought dual win.
The Bison continue Western Wrestling Conference duals next weekend as they travel to take on Utah Valley on Friday, Feb. 7, and Northern Colorado Sunday, Feb. 9.

NDSU Wrestling in NWCA Academic Top 30 for Fourth Straight Year
http://www.gobison.com/news/2014/5/7/WR_0507145525.aspx
The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams for the 2013-14 wrestling season, and the North Dakota State wrestling program is among the nation's top 30 for the fourth straight season.
The Bison registered a 3.061 team cumulative GPA to rank 26th in the nation using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program, 10 of which come from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. NDSU has appeared in the top 30 every season since 2010-11.
Senior 165-pound All-American Steven Monk and junior heavyweight Evan Knutson were named to the NWCA Individual All-Academic Team, making NDSU one of 21 Division I schools with multiple individual honorees. It was the second NWCA All-Academic recognition of Knutson's career and the first for Monk.
Monk registered a 3.226 cumulative undergraduate GPA and placed third at the NCAA Championships in March to become the highest national finisher in NDSU history. Knutson posted a 3.675 cumulative GPA and made his second appearance at the NCAA Championships.
