I understand completely how tough it is to successes at the next level. But There are programs doing it year in and year out. Answer this, before Cale Sanderson how good was Penn State? My answer is no where near what they are now, and if other schools have "better resources" then WI how did Penn State not have the same success before Cale Sanderson?

Again, if you want an honest answer to the resource question, PM Badgerjohn on the issue. I think he is still the chair of the Badger wrestling club and the chat I had with him about two years ago related to the financial constraints the Badger program has relative to those at Iowa, PSU, etc., was very enlightening. It would seem that the lack of financial support for the wrestling club is a material difference between the UW program and those other power houses.

But I will grant you that it isn't all money. Having Sanderson in your corner has a lot of value, as well. Anyone interested in helping move the Badgers to the next level might be well-served to look at the internal workings of a program like Missouri. They seem to have it figured out and they don't rely on the pedigree of their head coach for recruiting purposes.

Alex D ended up with the very best possible situation for him at OSU. His work out partners could not have been handpicked from anywhere in the county and been better for him .

The first thing he has to do is to learn how to take down Jordan Oliver , super quick and one of the best hand fighters in college wrestling . Then he would scrape with Caldwell and Perry , 2 more physical defensive wrestlers who helped hone AD's relentless offense.  I'm sure he would have had success if he would have attended Wisconsin but for AD personally I think he enhanced his chances by picking OSU at that given time .

Wisconsin or anywhere else couldn't replicate that so for those who want to pile on BD , give it a rest .

There is a super fine line when it comes to in-state talent , guys that have had success in-state and in Fargo are not that plentiful .

For those of you that have the time , go to the Cheese this year . Wow is all I can say , judge for yourself if you think some of our in-state talent matches up .

Why not get all 3? Should not that have been the goal.

How many scholarships were available?
From Milwaukee to St Paris.

Maybe we should look at it this way.

While many of us think the UW is the bomb,,,maybe these recruits dont think the way we do and would rather have another school higher on the list than we would like.

The coach at Oklahoma State went with the Fargo FREESTYLE champion.
Nobody said being the Badgers coach has an easy job and when you
let the super talented Badgers all end up out of state, then you finish
in the bottom half of the Big Ten. Greco specialist have had very limited
success in college, that is fact.

you say greco specialist like he wasn't also great at folkstyle

I mean he pretty much majored Dieringer as a Soph

won a college open as a soph

won folkstyle nationals

oh and won 4 state titles in folkstyle

you don't do that by being a 1 trick pony, Provisor is a Greco specialist and was solid at folk but far from great. Lowney was great at both and plenty of others have been as well. Wasn't Mango ranked #1 his senior year in college?

You all need to remember. Wisconsin is a tough school to get into academically also. Some of the elite wrestlers don't have the grades to get into Wisconsin.

In all actuality it really is not that difficult to get in as student athlete.

How about getting in as an adult student...   who likes to watch wrestling and talk about it online?  How many of us could make the grade there?

Funny... here we are talking about underperforming WI wrestlers and just a short time ago I watched Chance Marsteller's (OK St.) match against Wyoming.  Couple years ago the PA forums were calling Chance the next Kolat.

Hammen was previously on the forum describing the student athlete waiver system when he was competing. it would seem that a coach has a limited number of waivers available for use in getting an academically non-qualifying student-athlete into the school. He wasn't sure how many waivers a coach might have (varied depending on the sport), but the coach didn't simply have free reign to get everybody and anybody into school.
