I think there is a lot of value in sending a kid to college at 18 vs 17. Kids mature a lot in a year at that time. As far as holding them back, not sure if it's worth it for sports. Don't get me wrong. A year can make a big difference. I can think of a couple studs from Boyceville who it worked out very well for.
