Title: Ice, Ice, Baby
Post by: Houndhead on December 12, 2012, 01:16:20 PM
Made it out on the ice last weekend. Caught a few walleyes, nothing outstanding. 2"-4" of ice. Should be a good 5-6 by this weekend. Tis the season to be fishin'.

I need about another 6 more to have me even think about drilling some holes. I like a solid foot before I drag that fishing stuff down from the shelves ;D

My temp say 40 so I doubt ice is being made in my area with talks about same temps tomorrow.

I figure sometime in January.

Fished yesterday evening, and this morning. Between  3 of us, we had 9 walleyes between 19"-24", and about the same number of smaller fish. The ice is still only 2-4 inches, and with the rain today, I may be done for a week or so.

I just want to know if I should get out my 4-wheeler and ice auger, or my boat.  If it's my boat, maybe Hound will paint an X in the bottom of it, so I know where his secret spot is.   ;D

Ashland County, in the Butternut/Glidden area. The ice really varies from one lake to another, and even on the same lake. It rained yesterday afternoon, with a little snow this morning. I think the ice will be pretty iffy until we get some colder weather again.

Sounds like in my area it is not going to be a good week for ice making.

I guess I better get in wrestling watching shape for some heavy duty bleacher sitting with the holiday tournies coming up!

For now, you will have to place the X where ever you can find safe ice.

Can't say I have. I'll tell ya one low calorie twists I have with them. I take homemade tortilla chips (the leftovers from last night) throw them in a deep baking pamn (5-6 inches deep take soem gravy and add pulverized ancho peppers to it, a nice loose gravy; nothing too think. Drizzle it all over thsoe chips. Cut up your favorite curds or cheese (muenster works like heaven for this) plop on top of the whole deal along with some thin cross cut onions, sprinkle 'em all over the top. Cover with aluminum foil, 250 degrees for 20 minutes to half hour, pop off the alum. foil and finish off with fresh cilantro and mexican table crema, Chilaquiles ia what it's called in Mexico. Amazing.

I'll also add whatever leftover meat i have on top of the tortillas shells before I back them. Chop up some chicken or pork.

Crema -1 cup heavy cream
          T buttermilk

You won't ever buy sour cream again.

Fritos and curds, eh? Sounds good.

Yes but I cannt remember what the name of it was. It was good but I am not a gravy guy. I would have prefered fries and curds with some mustard on top ;)

There is a bar/grill here in Milwaukee where they specialize in it.  They add different meats and cheeses, etc.  I call the turkey one Thanksgiving on a plate.

Ask the Canadians.  They love this stuff.  I hear they are serious as a heart attack about their love of it.   ;)

ever had it there; but saw a show on it and saw the curds. Well, that was it. I didn't know other poeple took curds seriously. In Montreal, this is the mojo. You need to know how to make very good fries (two step process, if you've been following) so they're crisp and huge. They put it in like a box that Chinese leftovers come in.Tthen gooey curds, then gravy. What's not to like? Just try not to like it daily, eh? Love gooey curds, though.

The ice is better in this area. Heard of someone driving a truck on Butternut Lake. There is a little slush on top where I was fishing on saturday. I caught a 25-1/2" walleye on friday night and a 21" on saturday morning.

Went fishing northeast of Hayward on Sat.  Got a half dozen nice crappies (10-11 inches) and a 25 inch walleye.  Had 8-10 inches of hard ice, with an inch or two of snow on top.  Snowmobile trail across the lake was staked.  Saw several snowmobiles and a few ATV's (including ours), but no cars/trucks.  Sunday, went out on a smaller lake in the Rice Lake area (with areas of strong current) which had about 10 inches everywhere except near creek mouths (one still had open water).  Some cars and trucks had started to drive on it, but I think they are getting ahead of themselves.  Fishing was slow.  Had one flag, but it swiped my shiner.  Expensive trip, though, as my Vexilar fell off of someone else's ATV and broke.   :'(

I see a guy has a slim shanty on Perch lake in Sparta. I still don't trust the ice much, so I took the boy to open water below the Dang. 7 nice rianbows hit these little minnie spoons were using. Fun just to catch stuff. On the Miss, below the Gunderson building, they've been smacking the perch and bass. I've hear in Genoa and Stoddard things are active, too. Too dang many people our on Onalaska, though. My God, it's like Woodstock out there.

i've had my shack out over a week now but using shorelines (minocqua-boulder area) ... 4" has grown to 7-8" here in the past 3 days and improving daily so the conditions went from bad (late ice build) to good thanks to a respite from the storms.

wrestlers always welcome and the walleye bite is on ...

I just hate crowds. Love it when I can chat with a few; but I'm not a crowd guy. No biggie; there's plenty of ice out there.

How's your new ATV workin' out, Fish? Hope you've been ridin' in style.

I always hope to see you pull up, with your new pimped-out Polaris. "Boooom Booom, chuck, booboombooboom, chuck!!" Got a system installed, little hydraulic action, monkey hangin' handle bars, etc.

My new Suzuki is treating me well. I got the King Quad 400 4x4.  All I need is a rear view mirror from which to hang my fuzzy dice.   ;D

Actually, I wouldn't mind a rear bag/seat combo, but haven't found one that will fit on my rack, so far.

Oh, I thought you bought Polaris.

I have the old Quad and love that thing.

I've got the seat with the storage. Well worth it.

Beware, though. If you buy the seat online, measure the rack a few times to be sure the new seat fits it right on the nuts. You'll also want the flip down footrests for the passenger.

Just noticed I never posted the results of my trip. This was the first time I ever stayed out on the ice overnight like this. The fishing was ok, but could have been better. Between the 4 of us in the shack, we probably kept about 20 walleyes and sauger. We had three in the slot we couldn't keep, with the biggest being 23", and probably 25-30 small fish that we threw back.We caught 8 tullibees which went in the smoker. The tullibees are fun to catch. This was the first time I really did a lot of jigging for walleyes through the ice. It is good to learn a new method. The bad part of the trip is the 6-7 hour drive getting there and back(cuts into the fishing time), and the fact that there is no night bite at all. It would be fun if the fish would keep biting after dark.

Sounds cool. I never "shacked up" before like that. Hunting cabin, yeah, but on the ice. Never done it.

At least ya got some goody out of it. One year, you'll bring home the magic, big time.

My uncle does that (almost year round, 'cept the warmer months) and that's pretty much what he lives for. Got a honeymoon shack for him and the wife.

Dude lives for walleyes. Not too shabby.

Fish, it was $225 per person for the sleeper shack. That was Thursday afternoon until Sunday morning. They haul you out in tracked vehicles, check on you twice a day, minnows are provided. It was $24 for a 72 hour liscence. $50 for gas + whatever food and beverage you take.

I've gone to Leech Lake in the past for perch, and that trip is a little cheaper. $30 per person per nite for the cabin, not on the ice though. The fishing has been great every time I have went though, and it is about 2 hours closer. If I had to choose one trip to do, it would be Leech or Winnie for perch. I have been doing some searching for somewhere closer with a sleeper shack and good fishing. Nothing so far. The guy that went through the ice on Superior this year was renting sleepers on Chequamagon Bay. That good be a good trip, but his shacks were only for 2-3 people. We are also investigating the Lehr, ND area for walleye and perch. Check it out on the Lake-link fishing reports sometime. Almost sounds too good to be true.

Thanks for the info.  Sounds like fun.  I went out to the glacial lakes area (Waubay, SD) a few years ago, with a bunch of guys.  We rented a house and pulled our portable shacks onto different lakes, using our 4-wheelers.  It cost us about the same as what you spent.  The perch fishing was good and we caught some nice bluegills, walleyes and pike, too.  If I had it to do over again, I would bring snowmobiles or have chains on the ATV's though.  We got stuck alot.
