Title: Pulaski Invitational
Post by: Scooter67 on January 13, 2014, 11:18:03 PM
We are a little over 2 weeks away.  9 out of the 16 teams are ranked with 67 ranked wrestlers this year.  IMO it's the toughest tournament all year other than maybe the Cheesehead.  What are your thoughts about the tourney and your predictions on who will win each weight class.

I don't have a dog in the fight, and all 3 are great wrestlers. I will pick Caelwarts to win it. Whatever the finishing order is, it could be completely reversed at the end of February. Also, Hettinga and Rhinehardt will be seeing each other about 4 or 5 more times this season. It reminds me of Marcis and Welter from a few years ago.

looking back at both Track histories it doesn't look like Tyler and Luke have wrestled each other before.  Tyler is a beast and have to go with him on this one.  Hopefully will be a great match!

They could wrestle 5 times in one month; Pulaski, WVC, Regional, Sectional, State.

Kasey may need to beat both to win his home tournament.  How do you seed these guys, place at Pulaski last year, highest place at state, looks like they all have a loss this year and as far as I can see they have not wrestled each other this season.

What about Joe Kitslar at 220? What teams are there this year?

Bay Port
Coleman
Denmark
Freedom
Hortonville
Kaukauna
Luxemburg Casco
Merril
New London
Oconto Falls
Peshtigo
Port Washington
Pulaski
Seymour
Valders
Wausau West

Quad, I didn't put Kitslar in because he wasn't in the last ranking.  Who will Bayport have at 220?they seem to be alternating.

Looks like a tough tournament overall, toughest tourney besides cheesehead? Now thats a reach, jmo  bi states would drfinately be my choice, but not here to argue with anybody.Iam especially curious about the 106lb class.

This looks like a fantastic tournament with some great match ups. IMO I think Tyler Schmidt wins it at 220 he seem to be in a league of his own this year and is ranked nationally. Also, my pick is Hettinga to win it 160 even though all of the 160 pound wrestlers are battle tested and tough. I would love to be there to watch some of these match ups! Good luck to everyone wrestling!

I didn't know the reason for Kitslaars absence but did see that he wrestled last week.  We could use a 220 , could you send one our way?  ;D

Lee and Bergelin the top of the class at 106.  Barnett has super-improved in the last year and has had a great freshman year...I would see him in third.

Freedom(Garvey) is a good frosh that I could see in 4th position, most likely battling with Ball(Merrill) in the 4/5 seed area to see who gets the 1 seed.

Wausau West(Fisher) had a decent frosh at the beginning of the year that I do not believe has wrestled since missing weight against Merrill.  He is about the same level as Ball/Garvey.

Boowrestle, If you look at the teams that were at Bi-State they had some good individuals but the Pulaski Invite has the top 3 ranked teams in D1.  LC took 2nd at Bi-State, They will have their hands full finishing in the top 5 at Pulaski. I do have to agree that Bi-State was tougher then Mid-State this year.
Team Predictions IMO are:
1 Kaukauna
2 Merril
3 Pulaski
4 Bayport
5 LC or Wausau West

IMO I would love to see a few teams added to this tournament, like Wittenberg,Bonduel or Wrightstown to replace a a few teams that have been down for a while to make this even more challenging.

I wasn't saying it wasn't tough enough. What I meant was there are a few teams that will only get one or two guys past the first round.  There are some good teams in the area that would advance more wrestlers that I personally would like to see there.  Again it's just my opinion!

Scooter, The teams you are talking about are some of the original teams to the tournament. This invitational started in the late 60's with the likes of Coleman, Pulaski, Peshtigo, Denmark, ect. The cool  thing about this tournament is that most of the local talent that started this tourney are still there, I am quite sure if Wittenburg wanted in they could have gotten in but they have to want to be there.
Title: Re: Pulaski Invitational
Post by: Scooter67 on January 21, 2014, 02:49:54 PM
I agree , it's part of what makes this tournament what it is.  There are a few different teams today then when I was there in the 80's.  The addition of Merril this year definitely makes it tougher.  My statement was me being a selfish fan and meant no disrespect .

LOL....I know we are not a wrestling school but we can't even go to events that spell it right.  It is Wittenberg-Birnamwood. ;D

As far as going to Pulaski we did think about it for this year but decided not to in the end.  When you are going to see teams from your sectional a lot in the near future you have to decide if it is  a good or bad idea...however I did see Two Rivers dropped it this year so they may have had the same reasoning.

Padre. Two Rivers has never been in the Pulaski tournament at least not the invitational at the end of January. They do attend Pulaski's duals at the beginning of the year, I don't think they are dodging anyone either, they have gone toe to toe with LC at the Battle on the Bay, and Bi State plus had a great showing at the Cheesehead, they are both battle tested on the season.
Title: Re: Pulaski Invitational
Post by: padre on January 21, 2014, 11:31:43 PM
#1 Thought they were in Pulaski last year....my fault...absolutely no doubt Two Rivers has an excellent schedule.

#2 Dodging?  Hate that saying as it sounds like you are trying to get away from tough competition.  No one is.  Our conference overall hurts us as we have to bank a date on conference duals.  Doesn't help us but gets rid of forfeit-ridden duals.

By the way they have not gone toe to toe...the Bi-state and other large tournaments allows your studs to gain a ton of points compared to smaller tournaments....I think in a 6 team tournament it will most likely be a much different result.

Pure favorites team vs. team...

Two Rivers...106, 113, 120, 132, 138, 182, 195, 285

Casco.... 126, 145, 152, 170, 220

Toss-ups....160

Casco will have to be the top of their game and get some so-called upsets to win this.

Casco is not far off at 138, 195 and 285...they will need to win at  least 2 of those 3.

Last night Bay Port beat Coleman 36-30..

the Climax and the match of the night was the 2nd to last match, with Coleman's Kevin Lansin against Bay Port's Chad Osmanski at 145. the score was tied at 3 a piece with Lansin on the bottom in the 3rd, and with about 20 seconds left Lansin was about to get away, but Osmanski kept the pressure. I think Lansin tried to throw him instead of grabbing a leg, because they were pretty much hugging each other.  Osmanski put him to his back and pinned him giving Bay Port a 36-24 lead with Seewald pinning his 152 opponent in the last match.

Two great kids. two great teams with exceptional wrestlers.

Being from Coleman, I would like to see Coleman finish on top of LC in this tournament, but we'll see.

We will wait and see how everything pans out at your regional.  I think it would be very close with bonus points deciding it...but they have to beat Casco first.  I think we match up much better against L-C.

I agree, not to look past any of the other 220's but I'm really looking forward to Destiche vs Schmidt. I saw other saying Schmidt but I can see it going either way. Destiche keeps matches close and I think that's what gives him a chance to win.

160- Will be interesting to see how the seeding goes. Caelwarts can't be the #1 seed since he lost 5-0 to Reinhardt last week...so I am guessing Reinhardt goes to #1 and Hetttinga/Caelwarts on the other side.  Not sure if he is going 152 but at this point I may take my chances with Scarenbrock over those two.

Some comments on the tournament, JMO

Very well run tournament.

Very good wrestling.

Seemed to me it was a hard day for the referees, a real lot of calls being questioned by the coaches.

Destiche was a good choice for MVW.

Merrill was a great addition.

yea, a lot of coaches were upset.... understandably, calls could have been made either way... matter of opinion...

A rematch Of OF's Krueger and LC's Woracheck will be one to watch, as that went into overtime and Krueger questionably won.

true True Big House....I think they might have more one ...or 2... rematches. the LC coach was ticked....I could see why, but it  was the ref's call, and it was a tough call.  I agreed with the call... but LC nation didn't. I see why, but still.... let's see if he can win it when it counts for more.

What?  :o :o Can't believe the LC coach was ticked about a call that didn't go his way!

Kids may not be at the same weight come regionals.  Engelbert will be a huge factor in that mix also.  Not sure where any are wrestling for sure though except Worachek.

138 will also be a great weight class with some of the states best.

152...Sparby, Potrykus, Bennot, Blemke, Donati and whoever else joins the cast.

No easy weight classes in those middle weights that is for sure and anyone can beat anyone on a given day given the talent.
