Former Irondale wrestler earns All-America honor

Dustin Weinmann worked his way up the ladder as a high school wrestler at Irondale High School and capped his prep career with a state championship. Weinmann is following a similar path as a collegiate wrestler and has one season left to reach the pinnacle at that level.

Weinmann, who recently wrapped up his junior season at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, earned All-America honors by finishing third at the NCAA Division III championships. Wrestling at 133 pounds, Weinmann went 5-1 to claim third place and earn the All-America nod.

Weinmann entered the tournament, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, unseeded and lost his opening match to fourth-seeded Jesse Gunter of Baldwin Wallace. The loss dropped Weinmann into the wrestleback bracket, where he rattled off five straight victories to claim third place.

He got his wrestleback roll started by scoring a major decision (14-2) over Augsburg's Sam Bennyhoff, who was also unseeded in the tournament. Weinmann then won matches against four seeded wrestlers, starting with a 5-4 decision over No. 6 Bryan Israel from Ithaca.

Weinmann the pinned Wartburg's Connor Campo, the No. 1 seed, in the second period to reach the wrestleback semifinals. There, he got revenge on Gunter by scoring a 6-5 decision.

In the third-place final, Weinmann squared off against third-seeded Ryan O'Boyle from McDaniel and came away with a 10-6 decision.

The 133-pound champion was also an unseeded competitor. Devin Broukal of Wabash knocked off the eighth, fourth and second seeds en route to the title.

Weinmann finished the season with a record of 30-6. In three years at La Crosse, Weinmann is 70-24. As a freshman, Weinmann finished 21-11 and qualified for nationals, where he went 1-2. He qualified for nationals by finishing second at the Midwest Regional and was named to the D3wrestle.com all-freshman team.

He went 19-7 as a sophomore and finished second at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.

During his wrestling career at Irondale, Weinmann earned five letters, qualified for state four times and placed at the state tournament twice. He finished fifth as a sophomore and won the Class AAA 126-pound championship as a senior. He also earned academic all-state honors.

Weinmann went 42-2 as a senior and finished with a career record of 137-25. He holds the school record for career takedowns.


Not the only Weinmann at UW-L

Dustin Weinmann isn't the only Weinmann on the UW-La Crosse wrestling roster. His twin brother Ryan also finished his junior season and older brother Derek completed his senior season.

Ryan capped his junior season with his first trip to the NCAA tournament, where he went 2-2 in the 125-pound bracket. He qualified for nationals by going 4-1 and finishing third at the Midwest Regional tournament and ended his season with a record of 30-6.

Ryan was a five-time wrestling letterwinner at Irondale and finished fifth at the state tournament as a senior. He won three section titles, three conference championships and left Irondale as the single-season record-holder for pins.

Derek wrapped up his collegiate wrestling career with an appearance at the regional tournament, where he went 1-2 at 165 pounds. He opened the regional with an overtime loss, bounced back to win via major decision and then was eliminated in a 7-6 loss.

While at Irondale, Derek went 156-67 and graduated as the Knights' all-time wins leader and single-season record-holder in pins. He was a three-time team MVP and was named the conference MVP as a senior. He was a two-time captain in his six years of varsity wrestling and earned four all-conference nods.
