This is a great question. I did a bunch of research on this, not so long ago, just trying to figure out where JT fit in.

I'll dump it here when I've got a little more time, but for now, there's five realistic options:

Alan Ameche
Ron Dayne
Montee Ball
Melvin Gordon
Jonathan Taylor

What say you, WiWrestling?

I gotta go w/JT, just because I think he'll make a better pro than any other.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

I really don't know much about Ameche, so for me it is Gordon, Dayne, and JT probably in that order. Without looking at any stats, I would guess that Gordon's YPC are higher than Dayne's. If JT were to stay another he could be at the top of the list, ecspecially now that he is catching passes. Who was the QB during Dayne's time? Bollinger/Samuel? better than Stave/Hornibrook?

No clue on Ameche. One thing these guys all had was a great O Line so to me I'm going by the eye test rather than just stats.

1) JT - Size, strength, speed, patience
2) Dayne - Size, Strength, Burst, Patience
3) Melvin - Speed, Speed and Speed
4) Moss/Fletcher - Hard to pick one over the other but they were phenomenal together.
5) Ball - He kept White off the field and look how good he has become.

Michael Bennett
James White
Brian Calhoun

Just a few others to consider.

Since it is "Best" and not "most talented", I will go
Dayne
Ball
Taylor
Gordon
With Taylor needing a senior year to move to the top.

Most Talented
Gordon
Taylor
White
Dayne
Ball

I honestly agree that Taylor would benefit greatly from a senior season, especially with a more experienced offensive unit surrounding him.  I would love to see what he could do with another serious running threat in the backfield, along with a more mature offensive line.  The QB and receivers are good, but should be even better next year.
