If only his high school coaches would have known it was that easy. Maybe they would have gotten some more production out of him.   :o Great match, Go Gophers baby!

Nice win Dylan! Congrats!
We don't need trophies or fans, just the competition.

Nope!! Gophers won the dual fair and square but what was there to really be super pumped about? Wisconsin without 3 starters, Lizak and Bleise barely beat guys who aren't even NCAA qualifiers, and a dominating win by your 174 against a 157.

I sincerely hope somebody humbles him at the NCAA's.  Can't stand him.

Gable and Desanto are the bad boys of the NCAA. Either you love'em or hate'em.

I heard that there hasn't been an undefeated national champion, as a true freshman, since the 1940s. He'd be bucking a lot of history if someone didn't get him.

Realize that true freshmen have not always been allowed to wrestle at the NCAAs. In fact, that was the case for the first two decades of the Nationals ... and for another two decades, roughly from the late 1940s through the late 1960s. All-time greats such as Oklahoma State's Stanley Henson, Oklahoma's Dan Hodge, and Iowa State's Dan Gable were not allowed to wrestle at the NCAAs in their first year of college. That was the rules back then.

There have been only two times when first-year students have been eligible for varsity competition: during a small window of eligibility for a couple years immediately after World War II ... and since 1969.

After graduating from Wasatch High in 1997, Sanderson competed at Iowa State (ISU). He redshirted the 1997–98 season. As a redshirt freshman, Sanderson won all 39 matches and the NCAA title at 184 pounds (83 kg). He became the first freshman in NCAA tournament history to be named the NCAA Wrestling Team Championship's most outstanding wrestler.

Sanderson was also undefeated in the 1999–00 season, going 40–0 and winning another NCAA title. He also won the Dan Hodge Trophy as the nation's most outstanding college wrestler. He was the first underclassman to win the Hodge Trophy. In the off season, he won the World University title in Tokyo, Japan.

As a junior, Sanderson went 40–0, raising his record to 119–0. He broke the prior record, held by Iowa State alumnus Dan Gable, of 98 consecutive wins. He was also named outstanding wrestler in the NCAA tournament and was the first two-time winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy.[3]

Sanderson's 2001–02 campaign was a coronation of sorts. He again went undefeated at 40–0. He became the second wrestler to win an NCAA Division I individual title four times, the first being Pat Smith. He also won his third Dan Hodge Trophy as outstanding wrestler.[4] Sanderson set an NCAA record with 159 straight wins. His success brought attention even from non-wrestling fans. Sanderson was the first wrestler since 1988's "Wheaties Search for Champions" winner, Sammy Chagolla, to be featured on Wheaties cereal boxes for his achievement. His final college accomplishments were a record of 159–0, 4 NCAA titles, 3 Dan Hodge Trophy awards, 4-time NCAA Outstanding Wrestler, and 4-time Big 12 Conference Champion

I think the point being made is that true freshman were not allowed to compete in the NCAA for many years and that no true freshman ever went undefeated and won the NCAA title in that same year. Cael actually lost (at least) once in his true freshman year (to Paul Glenn of Iowa) at an open meet.

Yes he does have that unique chance and did well.

Great young man, he came in for a day during a camp we had and was very good. Nice kids that certainly loves to wrestle.
