Title: Appetizer – New Year’s Eve
Post by: Kjohnson on December 28, 2013, 06:16:45 AM
Appetizer – New Year's Eve

Going to a get together and need to bring a dish to pass. I'm sure the host will have the basics, I need something a little different.   In the past, it doesn't seem to be a seafood crowd. Any ideas?

2 Bags of Frito scoops

2 small cans of Rotel with chili tomatoes and 1 tube of Jimmy Dean Spicy Sausage and one brick of Velveeta cheese.

Melt the velveeta drain the Rotels and pre-cook the spicy sausage and drain off excess fat,  after the velveeta is melted mix in the tomatoes and cooked sausage. Great dip serve warm and the Frito's for dipping make this a real crowd pleaser might want to double the batch its that good.

I want to try new and different things this year....we seem to do the same things for Christmas Eve and New Years so I want to change it up this year. Any suggestions would be great.  For Christmas we had hot wings, honey BBQ wings, jalapeño cheese dip, hot itialian cheese balls, meatballs n gravey, raw beef, lil porkies, cheese and sausage and pickled herring.

Ram, you oughtta right a cook book for JD sausage. I agree, though, good stuff. Sounds like just the thing to make this little gem sing.

Seriously, though, if you make your own tortilla chips with this dip, you could hurt somebody. Real easy to make. I'm cool with scoops, though. I just don't get Tostitos and all these other weak tortilla chips.

Fritos go great in chili, too. I used to be all about just crackers with chili. these days, cornbread and chili are my favorite combo. Awright, shut up, Greg.

Raw Ground Round (freshly ground by the in-store butcher)
Rye Bread
Onions
Salt and pepper to taste

Gotta have this once a year at least. One of my favorites.

Ram, have you tried JD hot yet? I'm seeing it in the stores.

One good one for a meat crowd is to make your own pate out of braunschweiger.

8 ounces braunschweiger liver sausage

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1 tablespoon minced onion

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

salt and pepper to taste

If you don't do that I bet if you made simple ham salad people would rip into it. Stuffed mushrooms usually go fast, too.

I'll be at Tom's house eatin' a lard samich over the sink. ;)

Decide to go with Grandma J's chocolate chip cookies. It takes a little time but worth it

Decided to go with home baked Chocolate Chip Cookies. I use a recipe that my mother has made for 50 years. The key is to not overbake the cookies, let them sit on the baking sheet and continue to bake after they are taken out of the oven.  Her other secret is to use margarine that is 100 calories a serving. Hard to find, most are 70 or 80 calories.

I hate greasy fingers.  Besides, my dog always begs some from me and she's watching her diet.   ;D

Sounds yummy!  I actually splurged; went out and bought a rotisserie chicken and some fixins, just to surprise my bride.  Even with the flu, she thought it was a nice surprise.  Have a great night with the family!

My biggest weakness is out of the oven warm chocolate chip cookies and whole milk man o man they are just greeeeat.

Good choice not surprised it was well received.

Takes ya back home to have real chocochip cookies. Ever try the ones at IGA or WalMart? Uff! I like to put the doughballs in cold so they don't melt down too much.

My main cookie is peanut butter. Just wouldn't taste the same without the double fork crease. Bulk tank milk and I'm good.

G, have you ever tried the natural peanut butter in your cookie recipe?  If so, how was it?

I don't care for that stuff, honestly. A gal at school made them; and she knows how to bake (I suck), and they weren't as good. GOOD, but not as. There was just something missing. Prolly because my notion of a PB cookie came from Skippy.

A talented chef like you could easily make your own peanut butter with a food processor.  You should see if you can make a better natural PB.  I used to get some stuff that a local guy made down in Florida that was incredible - all natural ingredients.

Now that sounds trippy. Never had it. I got my supply of the best kim-chee coming this week. That is some poppin' cabbage. Hard to accept sauerkraut after digging that mojo. Thank God that Korean family moved to Cashton. (Racism Squirrel!)

Nobody is more happy than the SE Asian migration to Western Wisconsin than I am.  Played soccer in the 80's so I knew a lot of the Hmong families through my teammates and oh my did I get to know some really good Hmong/Thai influenced home cooking.

That and the famers market will often have Hmong farmers who have the BEST fresh garlic (tiny cloves; but so much more flavor than any other garlic) basil, etc. The IndoChinese store in La Crosse is unreal, also. Now we've got nice little Mexican stores popping up. Throw in the unreal produce the Amish bring and I've never eaten so well.

Fresh Thai Dragon Peppers!  Best stir fry hot pepper out there.  I finally just grew my own last year rather than going to the farmer's market every week.
