Unless I missed something 200 wrestlers and only 2 from the state of WI. Both are seniors. The Badger coaching staff takes a lot of heat on this board for missing out on the instate talent but based on those numbers it probably does make sense to put a lot of the effort elsewhere.

Those rankings are the present, recruiting is the future . Wouldn't give up just yet. Win magazine had 8 Wisconsin high schoolers ranked nationally lately.

That's a good observation.

If we had like 8 D1 schools like other states have more kids from that want to stay in WI for college would go D1 and more would be ranked. We had a couple lean year in WI, in the next 3-4 years we will have a lot more guys ranked.

I know I will be accused of bashing now but......  Is it possible that WI is getting most of our really good talent and just not doing enough with it once they get there?  Yes, it could be that we just do not have the talent, but you can't just rule out the other?

It's a question you just can't answer.  Once a wrestler is at a school (Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan, etc.) that is where they stay.  You just don't know for sure if a wrestler would have had more success at another school or with another coach.  I think there are a lot of variables involved when ultimately determining if a wrestler was "successful".

lizard king

Good point, heck there is a lot of struggle on here even deciding if the Badger program is successful.  Not just the badgers, but D1 in general, I really wish programs worked more at finding raw talent and making unranked kids AA, or at least qualifiers.  Very hard I am sure.

I don't really think that is the issue - few states have even five DI programs. Certainly, just counting the wrestling-rich states around WI (e.g., MN, IA, OH, IL) they don't have anything approaching 8 DI programs. In fact, you could probably count the number of states with that kind of opportunity on one hand with fingers left over.

As for current lean years, maybe. Or possibly, maybe this current trend is more of the norm. I really don't see WI as a state with a rich high school wrestling tradition - it's just average. And given the lack of participation at our DIII level programs, it would seem that we are even having trouble keeping the cupboards stocked for even that level of talent.

Well I believe the D3 level in WI comes down to school support and huge amount to he coach.   You do have to recruit kids...

well I guess I was speaking more so on the east coast

but even Iowa, Ill. and Mich all have 3-4 D1 programs, compared to 1 here.

many very good wrestlers never went D1 or wrestle at all.

and guys like  Schmercheck and  Morrisey might crack the ranks by seasons end.
I am not in danger, I AM the danger!

What are you smoking?  Multiple Wisconsin D3 programs are top 10 every year and have been for ages.  Parkside went through a little rough spell when Coach Koch retired but they are coming back as well and have been top 10 also for years.  If we kept all the Wisconsin kids in Wisconsin and developed them properly we'd have plenty of talent for all the programs.  Wisconsin doesn't have much of a wrestling tradition?  Are you completely nuts?  Wow!
