Stephen A. Smith, not a fan of Favre, stated on TV today that if any True Packer fan were to show up and boo him at a retirement ceremony should be ashamed escorted from the stadium and have their tickets revoked and given to a real fan. He went on to spew out tons of statistics focusing on giving his best efforts over 16 seasons in which in many cases was surrounded by a lot of average talent.  Skip Bayless who is a big Favre fan was totally shocked and agreed with Smith.

How about induct him into 'Packer Hall of Fame', but do not retire his number?  The character issues would lead me to believe he should not have the number retired.
Anyone else?

Favre deserves to be treated like any other great player from the past. The character issues are pretty minor.

Brett Favre put GB back on the map and gave them 16 great seasons. Only true fans remember what times where like before Favre, not the recent bandwagon fans that came on in the mid 90's. How can anyone be hung up on this at this point, I mean they won a SB since and the future looks great... it would be different if they where dismal since but that is not the case. The man brought his best in every game for 16 years, I mean come on the guy should have the red carpet rolled out for what he did in GB. They didn't have 1 losing season in 16 years he was the starter... in the 16 years prior to Favre the Packers had 2 winning seasons... wake up "fans"

the man didn't have 1 HOFer on his offense during the entire time he played and yet still put up bigger numbers than anyone in history.

Well I guess I'll ruin the Farve lovefest.  Should he be in the Packer HOF and probably have his number retired...absolutely. He was a great player and helped the Packers resurgence.  Now, he's also proved himself to be a a rather petty person with questionable character and attempted to throw the Team I support under the bus.  For that he gets my boos and general animosity (that and the fact that he absolutely sucked in big games).

Farve was one of the better regular season qb's in NFL history, and because of the way he played (good and bad) he was a joy to watch. For that the Packers (and other Teams) paid him dearly. He chose to go out in a rather unseemly manner...and I don't forgive him for it.

Favre was an ego driven, petty, self-centered individual who ended up caring way more about himself and his records than his team.  That said, he deserves to be in the HOF, Packers HOF, and have his number retired and should not be booed due to all he contributed to the organizated.

Favre was a great QB for offenses that lacked overall talent.  He "gunslinger" mentality won many game and produced results greater than the sum of the parts of many of his offenses.  On the down side, he is a bad QB to play in a talented laden offense because of his unwilliness to let the game come to him and not be to focal point.  His williness to takes chances was necearry with teams that needed that to get over the top but was destructive to teams that were well funtioning.  I would take Rogers who puts up similar produciton without the touchdowns any time - but that does not wipe away all the positive memories that Favre poduced (or all the heartbreaking loses) when he lost games rather than win them with his style.

I think Favre evolved into that self-centered, etc., guy, as I think many of us would given his circumstance.
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

I honestly believe that after his father passed away there was nobody left to check his ego.  After that he seems to be surrounded by leeches and yes men (and women) that told him what he wanted to hear and reaffirmed his ego rather than give him a needed reality check.  In doing so I don't think they have done him any favors.

sucked in big games.... from 1968 through 1992 the Packers went to the playoffs twice and went 1-2... during his years they went 11 times and they won 12 games and lost 9 (3 in OT)

your going to let a 40 year old man who isn't sure what he wants for his future to get in the way of 16 years of service that brought you 16 successful years? This man marched out there for every game for 16 years, with broken bones on his throwing hand and multiple other injuries... he gave you 16 years of 3,000 years with 13 years over 3,800 yards... had the most wins of any QB and your going to toss all that away over an offseason controversy?

many great players have huge a huge ego, many have to in order to be that good. Where would Rogers be if he was thrown to the wolves like many first round picks? Would he be as good? Maybe, maybe not. Favre broke your heart at times and at time him taking chances made him the hero.

I only ever recorded (on vhs) 1 regular season game, as I watched them all live... still watched this game live... the Monday night game after his dad passed, it was magical, the guy could have thrown for 600 yards if he wanted to... self centered? The man march on the field with injuries that would put most other QB's in the locker room.... self centered? Is it not possible to think of yourself and your future when you in his position? Did he not earn that?

or was he more concerned about keeping his consecutive game streak going?

"Team" guys don't gave their own locker room because they are "above" their teammates.

And yes the Oakland game was magical (as were many of the catches).  Just as the 6 pick game in the playoffs was super ugly.

And again, I'm saying his number should be retired and he should be in the HOF and not booed.  That doesn't mean I'm going to create a false idol of the man.  He was a great player, probably not a great human being - but being a great human being is hardly a requirement of a HOF career.

I am talking about games where he was injured during the game and kept playing... would you rather have Favre with a broken thumb or whoever was our backup at the time? Most of those very ugly games we where behind and we where forced to throw and he made some bad decisions... some balls get deflected, some receivers run the wrong routs... it happens.

Rogers is 5-4 (4 of those in 1 season) in the playoffs and he was handed a 13-3 team.. so he is 1-4 in the other 4 years.

as far as his character, he played 20 years and was never suspended by the league, he was never traded away for being bad in the locker room or off the filed issues... take a real good look at the off the field issues in the NFL over the last 20 years, based on that Favre is almost a saint.
