Title: Who do you want the Pack to pick in the 2nd and 3rd round?
Post by: The Last Ride on April 26, 2013, 07:23:31 AM
With us not doing much in FA the top three or 4 picks need to contribute a little faster..Reading some mocks already out for today's second round.. some have us taking Montee Ball, One has us taking John Jenkins Who would you guys like to see? I wonder if Green Bay feels that McMillan and and Richardson will step up at safety? Or will they take a safety in the next two rounds.. I would like a RB that can play all 3 downs if need be..

Green Bay - Day 2 was a busy one for Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson last season. And in cornerback Casey Hayward, he may have a future Pro Bowler.

Can Thompson find another instant contributor on Day 2 this year? Several potential reinforcements are on the board. Here's a quick look at some prospects who could slip to the Packers:

Terron Armstead, T (Ark.-Pine Bluff)

The Packers need help on the offensive line. It doesn't matter that the team took Derek Sherrod and Bryan Bulaga in the first round of back-to-back years. Armstead didn't face the competition of other tackles remaining on the board, but he's easily the most athletic. His time of 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash set a NFL scouting combine record. And in searching for a tackle, the Packers will need someone with a kick of nastiness.

Armstead is the case-in-point, boom-or-bust prospect. But his offensive line coach Damon Nivens believes Armstead will make it in the pros because of his approach. That athleticism has a little something extra.

"Off the field you can return back to yourself," Arkansas-Pine Bluff offensive line coach Damon Nivens remembers telling Armstead. "But you have to realize you're the baddest guy to ever lace up these shoes at this position. That's how you have to attack it. He believed in that and took off with it. . . . He's got that on-and-off switch. Off the field, he's a well-respected kid. On the field, he hits that button and he turns into a guy who's a real, real nasty football player."

Montee Ball, RB (Wisconsin)

No need for an introduction here. Ball was a one-man, record-breaking machine at Wisconsin. The question scouts have here is how should Ball's 924 career carries be viewed? Was his heavy workload a clear sign of durability, of a future No. 1 back? Or will the mileage scare teams off?

Green Bay would probably need to slide up the second round - something Thompson did last year - to grab Alabama's Eddie Lacy, but Ball and UCLA's Johnathan Franklin could be options. The question is how Thompson views Ball.

"Is he going to be a Pro Bowl-caliber starter that you'll want to change your offense for? No," one NFC scout said. "But he's going to give you everything he's got in pass protection. He's going to make great decisions running the ball. He's going to run with power when he has to run with power. He'll run outside. He'll do everything you want him to do when you want him to do it. He just won't do it in a way that makes you go, 'Ooh!'"

J.J. Wilcox, S (Georgia Southern)

The former college slot receiver and running back was a hit at safety last year, molding into a true pro prospect. The Packers saw San Francisco jump up to the 18th pick and take LSU's athletic playmaker, Eric Reid, but they can still find a player to compete with M.D. Jennings and Jerron McMillian in training camp.

Wilcox may need more time to develop. But his size (6-0, 216) blended with the ball skills will be intriguing to Green Bay. Morgan Burnett can handle the communication on the back end. The Packers need a rangy complement who can make plays.

If Thompson wants to think outside the box, Wilcox could pay off.

"I have a knack for getting to the football. I'm a tough, hard-nosed player," he said. "Every play I'm out there, I'm full throttle, full speed. I'm not going to take a play off. That's my mind-set. And that's going to separate me from a lot of guys."

Stedman Bailey, WR (West Virginia)

It may be time for Thompson to strike at wide receiver again. Randall Cobb is the only wideout he has drafted in the last four years. With Greg Jennings gone, don't be surprised if the Packers boss mines for a receiver. Bailey makes sense. He's a shade short for the position at 5 feet, 10 inches tall. Not a burner, not physically imposing by any means, Bailey is a crafty route runner and was wildly productive in West Virginia's wide-open offense. If the Packers want to give Aaron Rodgers another weapon, he could be a possibility.

"I think to model my game after Steve Smith," Bailey said. "He's a receiver that's not the tallest guy in the game, but that doesn't let him affect how he plays. He definitely plays like he's got a dog in him, and that's how I play. I don't care if anybody's taller than me. I just go out and play my game."

I am hoping there is a nice QB run and one of the big DTs falls to us.  Would also love to see the wr Woods drop think he could be a nice addition or maybe Ertz although I would just as soon wait for the te from Cincy i  the 3rd.

I like this guy in the second....

Johnathan Franklin is drawing comparisons to Frank Gore and Doug Martin as a three-down back with NFL-ready pass-protection skills and the physicality to succeed between the tackles at the NFL level.

Highly productive last season at UCLA, Franklin piled up 1,734 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns while adding 33 catches for 323 yards. He's a more complete back than Lacy

I like Franklin also, Hoping he lasts to the 3rd round. He is also a top notch charachter guy. He hopes to be the Mayor of LA someday.

I like Melenik, the T from Fla.St. if he falls to us in the 2nd rd.,
J.J. Wilcox in the 3rd.,
I like the TE  Gavin Escobar from San Diego State.
Cyprien, the S from Fla International, but I think he will be gone before we pick in the 2nd.

My wish list for Rd 2 in roughly order of preference:

Eddie Lacey
Kennan Allen
Jonathon Cyprien
John Jenkins
Jesse Williams
Johnathan Hankins
Justin Hunter
D.J. Swearinger
Kevin Minter
Robert Woods
Kawann Short
Zach Ertz
Johnathan Franklin
Damontre Moore
Arthur Brown

Fingers crossed on a big QB run to push the rest down to GB......

I would like a load in the middle of the DL.

I think the Pack will wait and maybe take a flyer on a guy like Lattimore even though he might be a year away.

Also, I read that the Packers were very good during FA. The signed there guys and that is a huge deal.

Here is a mock draft of the second round that shows us taking Jesse Williams.. a lot of people like him..(littleguy), but man we would have a lot of DL... (RB or Safety this round)... maybe they want another big body and because there is word that Pickett and Raji showed up out of shape and overweight at the first offseason workouts...

Having a 3 man line it would be nice to possibly run an 8 man rotation of some nature. I would include Perry in the rotation with some formations. Raji, Pickett, Neal, Jolley, jones and I am drawing a blank on the others. Plus Pickett is starting to get up there in age and a nice long term replacement on the nose would be very nice.

Not sure if Jesse Williams is the guy or John Jenkins but those 2 are some horses to contend with in the middle.

We have a lot of DL but the only two solid ones and Pickett is getting old and both him and Ragi only have next year on their contract.  The rest are pretty unknown, not overly productive, or have injury issues - and in some cases all of the above.  I don't really feel comfortable relying on Neal, Worthy - who we know will miss a lot of the season, Jolly, etc. to carry the load at any point.  Don't forget, the Packers gave up a ton of yards rushing at the end of last season so wasn't looking good either.  I also think they need to find a way of resting Raji more, hence the idea of a big DT to stop the run and spell Raji.

I do think adding some punch to the offense will help.  Particularly if they find consistent ways of moving the chains through an improved running game or short passing game (possession receiver like Wood or quality TE) to move the chains and rest the defense more by keeping drives alive - and force that cover 2 closer to the line of scrimmage/short middle of the field.

For me, BPA of the DT, RB, WR, S, LB.  I think there is a lot of 1st round value in some of those DT, RB, WR yet

Jmo,dont think they are going RB anytime soon,if they really thought they needed one they would of taken Lacy in the 1st rd,i think they are contenr with a healthy Benson(and will be cheap).? for everybody, anybody else find it odd that 1st 6 picks last year and 1st this year are defense, maybe TT isnt as good as some give credit for.Packers would be so much better if they had a dependable RB that could consistantly carry the rock.(they are going to regret not taking Lacy in 1st rd!!!!!!JMO.

Doesn't Lacey have some injury history to him?  I wonder if after the last two years they're being more cautious about the injury thing. I also worry about drafting a running back who ran behind that simply incredible offensive line.   Heard Bradshaw got cleared physically now, wonder if his name will pop up again.

That is a hard one for me because of the money spent on these kids.. but he could have no trouble in the past. then get a bunch of money and get into trouble after so nothing is for sure.. everyone deserves a chance... Honey Bear has tested positve about 10 times... not sure I would pick him..but a guy makes a mistake one time I would say yes..

Wow!!!!

Lacey to the Pack late in the 2nd after getting another pick in a trade down.  Could not envision a more perfect scenario for the 2nd round.

If Ball would have been there (I think he went to Denver 3 picks earlier) does Ted take Monte?

No, if Ball was the guy they wanted, they wouldn't have traded picks.

Ah, he was available and they traded down?  How many spots?

I believe with the spot that Green Bay traded out of,,,,Ball was drafted there.

The Packers moved from 88 to 93 in a trade with the 49ers, and picked up a  5th round pick. After WR Steadman Baily was picked in front of them by the Rams at 92, they traded the 93 to Miami for the 109 pick in the 4th, and a 6th and 7th. I think I have the picks right, but I'm not 100%.

I've gotten some good information from this thread.  Unfortunately this was not one of them.

Whose monkey does what now?
