This is in response to those who think the lighter the weight class the better....

I went back and did a little tally of the D1 All-Americans over the past 30 years ( back to 1985).

Here are 3 questions for anyone to guess at - I will post the answers later tonight....

1)  How many times has a D1 national champion won a title AFTER being an ALL - American at a lower weight class?  (* 30 years X 10 champs/years gives you a total of 300 D1 national champs)

DISCLAIMER - Note this list does NOT include:
A) guys who did not place at a lower weight class and moved up to win a title
B) guys who moved up a weight class and placed after not placing previously
C) guys who moved up a weight class and placed again after placing at a lower weight previously

2)  How many times has a national champion won his title AFTER MOVING UP TWO WEIGHT CLASSES?

3)  How many times has a national champion won his title AFTER MOVING UP THREE WEIGHT CLASSES?

The answers may surprise you......

Off the top of my head ---- not sure if these count with your criteria  --- Barry Davis  ;D , Cael Sanderson, Kyle Dake. (all were champs at lower wts)

and is Max Askren a minus on the count?  ;D

Damion Hahn fits the criteria

I'll will guess 18 total

After thought ... how do you count the year all weight classes increased   ???  .. 118 became 125 etc.

That year (1999) I didn't count Eric Guerrero  - even though he went from 126 in 1998 to 133 in 1999.  I probably could have counted him but I didn't because he was still in the second lowest weight class....

The only other wrestler from 1999 (when the weights were bumped up) who was a national champ but AA'd at a lower weight in 1998 was Casey Cunningham - he was a nat'l champ at 157 in 1999 after being 2nd at 142 in 1998.

Thanks for doing the research.   My guesses are:   1.   37      2.    5      3.   3

whatever

1. 71  after FRG's keen eye pointed out David Taylor being omitted, the correct number is 73

2.  11

3.  2

Whatever is a good name/description for this.  All your work was a waste of time.

Wrestlers naturally grow/add bulk(muscle mass) each year.  This data is useless unless you could show that their  body fat increased significantly.

This does nothing to disprove the lighter, the better.

Let's get one thing straight - your opinion means nothing here as your closed little mind is already set.

This thread is to help sway other people into realizing that lighter doesn't always mean better.

Now run along, MNb, nothing to see here......

whatever,
Thanks for doing the hard work. You didn't happen to write down names did you? I was just wondering who the answers to number 2 and 3 were.

whatever

Yes I did, HMsDad - I will post the list when I get to school today.

The 2 who moved up 3 weight classes were Kyle Dake (obviously) but the other was Daryl Weber of Iowa.

Weber tells the story of how he was at 150 and wrestled terribly in a meet and Gable pulled someone out of redshirt which forced him to cut down to 142 to crack the line -up where I belive he was 6th.  He was later an AA at 158 and then won a title at 167......but in one person's closed mind,  I 'm sure Weber put on 25 lbs of solid muscle and was still at the lowest bodyfat % possible....

Yes Whatever,

Thanks for doing the research.

MNbadger ... to say it is absolutely a waste of time.    Come on man ... no where did he claim this without other scenarios.  He is just pointing out facts and based on some of the chatter here it was very relevant research.   Even if not correct to a 0.1% of someones body fat.

Give someone some credit.  It is Thanksgiving MNbadger.

These number make you think a bit.

So a 1/4 stronge of the past 30 years of division 1 champs have moved up a weight to win their championship. Is that right?

Yes that does make you think a bit and regret some of our past practices. My son is just now joining wrestling and I will push him to get bigger, faster and stronger.

Not quite - 23.67 % to be exact. ;) Again, FRG's correction puts the % at 24.33%

To be fair, some of these guys won titles at a lower weight and then moved up a weight and won titles again (i.e. Tom Brands, Barry Davis, Cael Sanderson, Kyle Dake) but there are also plenty of guys won titles ONLY after moving up, too  (Damian Hahn, Jake Varner, Jake Herbert, ....and a guy by the name of Andy Rein,   who was not counted because it was before 1985....)
