STEVENS POINT--The UW-Whitewater wrestling team won seven matches
enroute to a 26-10 win over UW-Stevens Point Friday night at the
Quandt Field House.
Cedric Gibson got things rolling for the Warhawks with a 4-1 win
over Jordan Schulte at 165 pounds. Whitewater head coach Tim Fader
was pleased to see his team take an early advantage

at 125 pounds. |
“I think Cedric had a good game plan,” Fader said. “He has a big
gas tank, so he can go and go and go. I don’t know if that was the
first period that he wanted or we wanted, but he started to score
some points and I thought dominated the match.”
Ryan Conat answered with a victory at 174 to momentarily knot the
score at three.
But the Warhawks would answer in a big way, rattling off a streak of
five consecutive wins to extend their lead to 17. The Pointers
stopped the bleeding with a win from Jordan Kust at 141 pounds.
“I thought Jordan Kust did a really nice job,” said UWSP head coach
Johnny Johnson. “Jordan was controlling the ties and firing off
shots. I think Jordan was one of the few guys that walked out on the
mat and expected to win, and he did that.”
Whitewater immediately responded as Chris Sarbacker won by fall in
6:43.Ben Strobel took the nightcap by major decision for the
Pointers to finish off the dual.
With the loss UWSP fell to 7-13 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC. Johnson
thinks he team can take a valuable lesson from the loss. "I think we
were in some of those matches that maybe, they didn’t think we
should be in," Johnson said. "The problem is, if our guys believe
that too they are going to win those matches instead of just be in
them."
The Warhawks improved to 19-7 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC. Fader
knows his team will have to continue to hit the grind as the regular
season draws to a close.
“We have two duals meets…and then we all get together for the
conference tournament,” Fader said. “Our season is short now. We
train seven or eight hours at practice for a seven minute match. Our
season is short and we are putting time in for those big matches we
will see at the end of this season.”
