Chris Heilman has been named an assistant wrestling coach at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"Whitewater has a winning tradition, with a great staff working
hard to make sure Whitewater athletics stays on top," Heilman
remarked. "Coach Fader and his staff have raised the bar and I'm
looking forward to being a part of that. I am anxious to get on
campus to start helping the team grow. I have always been an
offensive minded wrestler, so I think our styles will mesh well.
Coach Fader emphasizes developing the whole student athlete, and
I couldn't agree more with that. I think we will do some great
things."
Heilman was the wrestling coach and a physical education
instructor at Davenport (Iowa) West High School for the last two
years. Prior to that he was a graduate assistant coach at Saint
Cloud State University (Minnesota) for two seasons.
UW-Whitewater wrestling just completed one if its best seasons
of competition, winning the WIAC crown and placing eighth in the
NCAA III championship," UW-W director of athletics Paul Plinske
said. "He brings great enthusiasm, along with a sound background
of high school, Division II and Division III wrestling knowledge
. His ties will help us attract the best wrestlers in the
region."
Heilman earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell College in
Mount Vernon, Iowa, graduating in 2008. He followed with
graduate study at Saint Cloud.
"UW-W wrestling is very excited about Chris joining us as an
staff, full-time assistant coach," UW-W head coach Tim Fader
said. “This is an important hire for our program and really for
our sport. Chris has an impressive background and I always found
myself getting matside to watch him compete when he wrestling at
Cornell. He was quick, technically superior, and an obvious
leader in their program."
"It was clear in his interview that Chris has the same passion
for wrestling that our staff has, and he will be a high energy,
tenacious instructor in the room and recruiter on the road,"
Fader added.
Heilman was a four year letterwinner at Cornell. He won the 125
pound class in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in
2008, the first league champion at Cornell in ten years. Heilman
earned All-America honors three times, finishing seventh in the
NCAA III championship in 2006, fourth in 2007, and third in 2008
when he compiled a 38-4 record. He is fourth all-time in the
Cornell record book with 132 career wins, fifth with a .809
(132-31) winning percentage, and he holds the number one spot
with 23 career technical falls.

Six Whitewater Warhawks headed to NCAA Championships…
UW-Whitewater is sending its largest contingent, six
wrestlers, under head coach Tim Fader to the NCAA Division III
championship tournament hosted by UW-La Crosse in La Crosse,
Wisconsin Friday-Saturday, March 9-10. The Warhawks will be
represented by Grant Sutter (Dodgeville), Jake Fredricksen
(Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), Cade Sarbacker
(Iowa-Grant/Iowa-Grant), David Dwyer (Rockton, IL/Hononegah),
Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) and Corey Anderson
(Rockton, IL/Hononegah).
Latella, a 197 pound qualifier, will be making his third
appearance in the NCAA meet. He qualified as a sophomore and
finished fifth to earn All-America honors last year. Latella,
16-4, is the eighth seed in his bracket. He will open against
Andrew Lovins of Heidelberg College, a qualifier out of the Ohio
Athletic Conference.
Fredricksen also has national tournament experience, having
qualified last year. He is seeded fifth at 133 with his 28-4
record. He has a first round bye, and will face Eric McCann of
Delaware Valley, 23-8, in round two.
Sarbacker, 8-1, is the seventh seed in the 149 class. His first
round opponent will be Ryan Warczynski of the University of
Dubuque. Warczynski is making his third trip to nationals.
Dwyer, 23-7, is seeded fifth at 184. He has a first round bye,
then will face Brian Broll of Buena Vista College, a three time
NCAA qualifier.
Anderson, 35-3, is the fourth seed at 285 pounds. His first
match will be versus Matthew Mahon of Ithaca College, 25-7 and a
two time NCAA III tournament participant.
Sutter, 11-0, earned the sixth seed at 125. He has a bye in
round one, then faces Mike Fuenffinger, 14-7, of 2011 runner-up
Augsburg College.
UW-Whitewater's number of qualifiers is exceeded by just three
schools. Wartburg College, the 2011 champion, leads with ten
qualifiers, followed by Augsburg and Coe College with six each.
Ithaca College joins UW-W with six qualifiers. The top eight
finishers in each weight class earn All-America recognition.
Wartburg and Augsburg has monopolized the Division III wrestling
championship, with one of the two winning the last seventeen
team titles.
UW-W finished twenty-ninth in the NCAA III championship last
year. Whitewater's best finish ever in a national tournament was
a third place tie in the 1967 National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics championship, and the Warhawks' best
finish in the NCAA III championship is seventh in 1987.

Tournament Sunday in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena of
Williams Center in Whitewater. The win, UW-W's first since 1991,
breaks a string of fourteen consecutive titles by UW-La Crosse.
Whitewater's five champions, and one wild card, advance to the
NCAA III championship March 10-11 in La Crosse.
Grant Sutter, tenth in the national Division III ranking, won
the 125 class with a pin and a major decision. He opened with a

prevailed in the championship 3-2 over Zach Strickland of La
Crosse. Latella is 16-4.
Corey Anderson, third ranked nationally, won the 285 title. He

Billy Mayer of La Crosse, ranked seventh in Division III.
Anderson won 8-0 and upped his record to 35-3.
Jake Fredrickson will be making a return trip to the NCAA III

133 and earned a wild card berth. Fredrickson lost in overtime
3-1 to fourth-ranked Adam Sheley of La Crosse. He came back with
a 13-1 win over Neil Manns of Eau Claire, and won the third
place match 8-5 over third-ranked Timothy Wunnicke of
Platteville. Fredrickson, UW-W's representative on the WIAC
Sportsmanship Team, is 28-4.
Whitewater's Cedric Gibson, ranked tenth, earned the WIAC's
second alternate spot. He will compete at the NCAA III meet if
two wrestlers in the top sixteen (ten champions, six wild card)
are unable to compete in La Crosse. Gibson owns a 32-10 record.

UW-W defeats UW-P
With all six of its seniors, and each of the four nationally
ranked wrestlers in the lineup, winning on Senior Night,
ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Platteville 42-6 Thursday
night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater.
Whitewater, 21-7 in dual meets, will host the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Division III Championship
Sunday, February 26 beginning at 10:00.
UW-Whitewater , UW-Platteville (match began with 125 pound bout)
125: Grant Sutter, WW, won by forfeit
133: Jake Fredrickson, WW, won by forfeit
141: Brian Lewis, WW, def. Emeric Williams, UWP, 10-2
149: Zach Fisher, UWP, won by forfeit
157: Corey Schmidt, WW, def. Peter Crocco, UWP, 8-3
165: Cedric Gibson, WW def. Shawn Flom, UWP 13-6
174: Reid Dickerson, WW, pinned Quinn Sedlak, UWP at 1:26
184: David Dwyer, WW def. Abe Graziano, UWP, 19-9
197: Adam Latella,WW, def. Nick Martin, UWP, 22-7
HWT: Corey Anderson, WW def. Bryant Etherton, UWP, 25-9
Fans that took their time parking or getting into the gym might
have been surprised to see Whitewater already ahead 12-0 five
minutes after the meet was supposed to start. Platteville
forfeited at 125, where Whitewater's Grant Sutter picked up the
win to move to 8-0 on the season, and 133, where Whitewater's
Jake Fredrickson is ranked sixth with a 25-2 record.
Brian Lewis, the first senior in action for Whitewater, raised
his record to 15-13 with a 10-2 win over Emeric Williams at 141.
Lewis led 4-2 after one period and 5-2 after two.
The only points Platteville earned came when Whitewater
forfeited at 149, with Platteville's Zach Fisher picking up the
win to improve to 5-13. Whitewater led 16-6.
Corey Schmidt defeated Peter Crocco 8-3 at 157 to up
Whitewater's lead to 18-6. Schmidt led 2-1 after one and 4-1
after the second period. At 165 pounds Whitewater's Cedric
Gibson, ranked tenth in Division III, and Platteville's Shaun
Flom battled for every point through two periods. Flom held a
2-0 lead after the first, Gibson cut it to 2-1 at 1:52 in the
second, tied it 2-2 at 1:28, and took his first lead 4-2 with
0:48 left in the second. Gibson was up 4-3 at the end of the
period. The nip-and-tuck (no capitals, not the TV show) nature
of the first two periods went out the window in the third, as
Gibson scored as many points in the final period as the two
wrestlers did combined in the first two. The two decisions gave
Whitewater a 22-6 lead.
Reid Dickerson's pin of Quinn Sedlak at 174, his fourth of the
season, increased Whitewater's lead to 28-6. Dickerson started
slowly, leading 2-1 after the first period, but didn't need a
third period.
UW-W's David Dwyer, ranked seventh, moved his season mark to
21-6 with a 19-9 major decision over Abe Graziano at 184. Dwyer
took control with a 10-5 lead in the first period and upped that
to 14-6 after two. Whitewater's lead was 32-6. At 197 Adam
Latella took an 8-3 lead after one, increased that to 13-4, and
ended the match with a technical fall, 22-7 at 7:00 for a 37-6
Whitewater lead. Corey Anderson at 285 pounds, number three in
Division III, ended the evening with a 25-9 technical fall at
5:47.

Wrestling....Sake Bottle to Whitewater in Battle of Ranked Teams

There will never be a match decided by a slimmer margin, with
UW-Whitewater, ranked ninth in the National Wrestling Coaches
Association Division III Brute/adidas poll, edging UW-Parkside,
ranked twelfth in the NWCA Division II poll, 17-16 Thursday
night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater. With the
victory Whitewater earns possession of the Sake Bottle Trophy,
initiated in 1975, breaking a string of six consecutive wins by
Parkside.
UW-Whitewater 17, UW-Parkside 16
174 Luke Rynish, PK, defeated Reid Dickerson, WW, 22-8 (MD)
184 Matthew Gille, PK, defeated David Dwyer, WW, 7-3
197 Davien Willis, PK, defeated Adam Latella, WW, 11-5
285 Corey Anderson, WW, defeated James Malechek, PK, 11-7
125 Grant Sutter, WW, defeated Jake Papke, PK, 9-1 (MD)
133 Jake Fredrickson, WW, defeated Collin Crume, PK, 6-4
141 Elroy Perkin, WW, defeated Arik Yde, PK, 8-2
149 Mike Migawa, PK, defeated Cade Sarbacker, WW, 6-3
157 Dillon Berra, PK, defeated Kegan Arthur, WW, 6-0
165 Cedric Gibson, WW, defeated Monterail Johnson, PK, 12-4 (MD)
The advent of starting collegiate matches with a weight class
drawn earlier, as opposed to always progressing from lowest to
highest weights, adds an interesting dimension. UW-Parkside
coach Gregg Lewis could not have been disappointed with the 174
class being picked.
Parkside's Luke Rynish, the NCAA Division II runnerup last year and
number one ranked this year, upped his record to 38-4 with a
22-8 win over Reid Dickerson, now 19-17, for a 4-0 Parkside
lead. Matthew Gille, a 2010 Division II All-American, extended
the Rangers' lead to 7-0 and his record to 14-8 with a 7-3 win
over Whitewater's David Dwyer, seventh in the Division III
ranking and 20-7 this season. Davien Willis, 33-12, defeated
Warhawk All-American Adam Latella, 12-4, at 197 to increase
UW-P's lead to 10-0.
Warhawk co-captain Corey Anderson, third in the Division III
ranking, came from behind to win at 285. Anderson fell behind
James Malechek 5-3 in the second period, tied it at 5-5 with
twenty seconds left in the period, but entered the third behind
6-5. Anderson had a 0:39 riding time advantage at that point.
Anderson scored four points in the third period to raise his
team-leading record to 32-3. Parkside led 10-3.
Freshman Grant Sutter, a second semester addition to the team,
remained unbeaten at 8-0 with a 9-1 win over Jake Papke at 125.
Sutter led 6-0 after two periods, made it 8-0 with 0:46 left in
the third, and Papke scored his point with 0:22 left. Sutter
piled up more than four minutes of riding time to give UW-W the
major decision, and pull Whhitewater closer, 10-7.
Jake Fredrickson, ranked sixth in Division III, pulled UW-W even at
10-10 with a 6-4 win over Collin Crume at 133 pounds, raising
Fredrickson's season mark to 25-2.
UW-W freshman Elroy Perkin may have come up with his biggest win of
the season in the win at 141. Perkin, now 10-12, led 2-0 after
period one, and increased that to 5-0 after two periods. He
upped the score to 7-0, with more than four minutes of riding
time, in the third. Parkside's Arik Yde scored two points with
seconds left, and Perkin added one for riding time to earn the
decision that put UW-W in front, 13-10.
At 149 pounds Whitewater's Cade Sarbacker, sixth in Division III,
matched up with Mike Migawa, a NCAA II tournament alternate in
2011. Sarbacker led 1-0 after the first period, and it was tied
2-2 after two. Migawa took a 4-2 lead with 1:09 left in the
match, extended it to 6-2 at 0:54, and Sarbacker closed the
scoring with a point at 0:23. The loss is Sarbacker's first of
the season after beginning competition in the second semester
with six straight wins. Whitewater and Parkside were knotted at
13-13.
Parkside's Dillon Berra entered his match ranked first in Division
II with a 12-0 record. Berra led 2-0 after the first, added an
escape from the starting position and a takedown in the second
for a 5-0 lead, and riding time for a 6--0 decision. The score,
with one bout left, was 16-13 Parkside.
Whitewater needed a major decision in the final match, at 165, to
win. Sophomore Cedric Gibson rushed out to a 9-3 lead, increased
it to 10-3, flirting with the eight point margin that would give
UW-W the four points it needed. When the final whistle blew
Gibson led 11-4 on the scoreboard, but his 1:20 of riding time
gave him a major decision and boosted Whitewater's total to 17
points.
UW-Whitewater is 20-7 in dual meets. Parkside, which wrestles in
more tournaments than duals, is 2-3.`
The Warhawks and Rangers met earlier, although it was in a much
different environment in the 31-team field at the Pete Willson
Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois January 28. UW-Parkside won
the tourney and UW-Whitewater took second place. Sarbacker and
Gibson won Willson titles for UW-W, Rynish won his weight for
Parkside.
Whitewater will host UW-Platteville Thursday, February 16 at 7:00
in the annual Senior Night match. UW-W will host the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Sunday,
February 26, beginning at 9:00.

runnerups, ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater finished second in the
field of thirty-one teams at the Pete Wilson Invitational hosted
by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois Friday and Saturday. The

Tim Fader will be inducted into
Augustana (IL) Hall of Fame
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
wrestling coach Tim Fader will be inducted into his alma mater’s (Augustana
College, IL) Hall of Fame. The following was written by Dave Wrath,
SID at Augustana.
Six individuals and one team will become the newest members of the
Augustana "Hall of Fame" on Saturday, October 22.
The induction will take place as part of Augustana's homecoming
activities and it will be the 16th class inducted into the school's
Hall of Fame. The class will also be presented at halftime of the
football game between Augustana and North Park.
The six former student athletes to be honored are: Mark Brooks (1973
– basketball), Doug Felder (1977 – track & field/football), Ann (Radloff)
Hubbard (1980 – tennis), Kurt Kapischke (1984 – football), Greg King
(1985 – football) and Tim Fader (1991 – wrestling). Also being
inducted in an honorary capacity is the 1986 football team which
captured the school's fourth consecutive national team title with a
perfect 12-0-1 record. With the induction of these seven, the ranks
of the "Tribe of Vikings Hall of Fame" now swell to 132.
TIM FADER…1991…Wrestling
When Tim Fader's Augustana wrestling career ended, only two
grapplers in the history of the school's storied program had
recorded more wins in a Viking singlet. He won 124 matches in his
four years, while dropping just 39, capped by a 43-10 record as a
senior. He finished his four years as a two-time team MVP, CCIW
champion and All-American and three-time national qualifier.
After earning a second-place state finish at 126 pounds at Rochelle
(Ill.) High School, Fader came to Augustana and wrestled at 142
pounds for his entire four years. As a freshman, he split time at
that weight with future Viking head coach Pat Marsh, going 16-14.
For the next three years he would have the weight class all to
himself.
He led the team in wins as a sophomore, going 31-9 and winning his
first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin 142-pound title as
well as team MVP honors. He qualified for the national tournament,
where he finished just one match shy of earning All-America honors.
He achieved that All-America recognition a year later, qualifying
again for nationals and bringing home a fourth-place finish. He
finished his junior season with a 34-6 record, leading the Vikings
in wins and capturing the CCIW championship and team MVP honors for
the second straight year.
Augustana hosted the NCAA Division III nationals in 1991 and Fader
again qualified, winning fifth-place hardware at 142 pounds in front
of the Carver Center faithful. He finished the year with a 43-10
record and won All-America honors for the second time.
As impressive as Fader's feats were on the mat, his academic
achievements were no less striking. He was a three-time National
Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar Athlete and a two-time GTE
first team Academic All-American as selected by CoSIDA. In addition,
his senior year was capped when he was named the winner of
Augustana's Knut Erickson Award, presented annually to the senior
blanket award winner with the highest cumulative grade point
average.
"Lived it and loved it!" said Fader of his Augustana experience. "It
made me who I am. Great friends, mentors and memories."
Fader is currently the head wrestling coach at the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater and NWCA Division III president. He graduated
from Augustana in 1991 with a degree in business administration. He
later earned his master's degree in sports management from the
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Prior to taking the head coaching
job at UW-Whitewater in 2004, he spent nine seasons at UW-La Crosse,
including the last six as head coach. He had assistant coaching
positions at his alma mater for two years and Oregon (Ill.) High
School and the University of Minnesota-Morris for one year each. He
also spent two years with the accounting firm of McGladrey & Pullen
in Moline, Illinois.
Tim and his wife Tracey are parents to McKenzie, Molly, Shae and Rye
and reside in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
World Champion Lee Kemp joins coaching staff at UW-Whitewater
By Tom Fick UW-Whitewater Sports Information
10/12/2011
Lee Kemp, one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the history of
the sport, has joined the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
wrestling staff.
"What an opportunity for UW Whitewater and our wrestlers and staff,"
UW-W head coach Tim Fader said. "I am really excited for the Warhawk
wrestlers in our program. This is a chance for our guys to really
learn and take from one of the best wrestlers our country has ever
had. I have the opportunity to hear Lee speak and relate to younger
wrestlers and have always been impressed. He has coached at the
highest level of our sport. He is more than "just interested" in
topics that can make a difference in a college wrestling career --
nutrition, technique, motivation and preparation. I am excited to be
around that level of knowledge and that type of success and
achievement. He is a very sincere and inspiring person and we
welcome Lee Kemp to our program," Fader added.
Kemp's resume' is so extensive that his name transcends the sport of
wrestling.
His collegiate career came just 45 miles from Whitewater at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kemp went 143-6-1 for the Badgers,
with five of those losses coming in his freshman year. His first
year accomplishments included a win over Dan Gable and a second
place finish in the NCAA championship. He lost the championship
match on a split referee's decision in overtime. That would be
Kemp's only loss in NCAA championship competition as he won titles
in 1976, 1977 and 1978. His 39-0-0 record in 1976 was the only
undefeated season in Division I wrestling. He went 103 consecutive
matches without a loss (sixth best ever), and 87 in a row without a
loss or tie (fourth best ever). Kemp was a three-time Big Ten
champion, and three time Midlands Tournament winner.
Kemp's international career spanned the globe. He won three world
championships (Mexico City 1978, San Diego 1979, Alberta, Canada
1982), the first coming at the age of 21, just after finishing
college and the youngest American to win a world or Olympic title at
the time. Kemp added gold medal honors in World Cup competition four
years in a row (1979-82), the first American to accomplish that
feat. He also won Pan American Games gold medals in 1979 and 1984,
as well as seven national championships (Amateur Athletic Union and
United States Wrestling Federation). He was selected for the 1980
U.S. Olympic team, but the U.S. boycotted the games in Moscow,
Russia (USSR at the time).
His coaching career, like his competitive career, came at the
highest levels of the sport. Kemp coached the U.S. freestyle team
that competed in the 2007 World Championship in China, coach the
U.S. freestyle team at the World Junior Championship in 2007 in
Beijing, China, and he was the head coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic
team that competed in Beijing.
Kemp's honors and awards, just the highlights, include some of the
most coveted in sport. Amateur Wrestling News named him the
Outstanding Freshman in 1975 and the Outstanding Sophomore in 1976.
The same publication honored him on the "Post 1958 Era All-Time
Collegiate Wrestling Team". He was inducted into the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1989, one of six hall of fame selections
he has earned. That group includes the George Martin Wrestling Hall
of Fame (1983) in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame
(2009), and the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame, conferred
during the 2008 Olympics. He was named the United States Wrestling
Federation Man of the Year in 1978, and was a two time finalist for
the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States.
"Five years ago I made an important decision to get back into
wrestling and use my background and experience in wrestling and
nutrition to make a positive impact on the athletes I was working
with," said Kemp. "I really enjoy getting on the mat and working
with the athletes, and realize that I have lot to give and share. I
believe the timing is perfect for me to connect with UW Whitewater
and do what I can to help them win big."
Kemp's unique abilities will be shared in a weekly learning moment
that will include training tips, motivation and inspiration
elements. The sessions, just ten minutes long, will be held at 2:30
every Tuesday from now through December 13 in the upper lobby of
Williams Center on the UW-W campus . Everyone -- UW-W athletes, UW-W
students, fans, members of the community, is welcome to attend the
free sessions.
"Lee Kemp brings world class insight to the wrestling program at
UW-Whitewater. His background and experiences will make an immediate
impact on our team," UW-W athletic director Paul Plinske noted. "I'm
especially excited about the work that Lee will be doing with all of
our programs. His weekly thoughts on training for peak performance
will be shared with all of our student-athletes. Many will benefit
as we strive to establish championship performances in our program,"
said Plinske.
Kemp is the proud father of three children, Jordan (18), Mercedes
(17), and Adam (11).
The UW-Whitewater wrestling team placed third in the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last year and twenty-ninth in
the NCAA Division III championship. The Warhawks will open the
season with a quad meet at UW-Madison November 13 that also includes
Northern Illinois and Loras. The first home appearance of the season
will be November 17 at 7:00 with UW-La Crosse visiting Williams
Center.
